Hi to all of you in the UK.  The US Air Force is sending me to RAF Alconbury this coming September.  Of course, everyone I know has been giving me the "all guns are illegal in Great Britain" line.

I think I have a basic understanding of the firearms certificates, needing approval from a police examiner, having to be a member of a club and etc. from reading this part of the forum.  Is the process any different for a US citizen, and what sort of time and expense can I expect?  Any chance of being approved for a centerfire rifle, or will I be stuck with a shotgun or nothing at all?  How do I start the process, and is there anything I can do before I arrive in country?

I'm also curious about recommendations for good clubs and ranges in the area I'm going to.  Looking at the map, the base is near Alconbury and Great Stukeley, Cambridgeshire.  Huntingdon is about six miles away, and Cambridge is 24 miles to the southeast.  I have not done much in the way of competitive shooting, but I'm not afraid to learn.

Wait until you get here and join a club but expect at least a six month wait before being successfully granted an FAC for a center-fire rifle, one problem might be getting a referee as they need to have know you personally for a significant period of time.  Shot gun might be quicker but still expect a bit of a wait.

Grove is a good club, not too far from the Alconbury area, they shoot at Stanta regularly which is a great field firing range and they have their own indoor range I believe. I know a few members and can get details nearer the time for you.

I am a Grove member.  We use STANTA battle area, Thetford gallery (100 - 600 yard), Barton Road  (Cambridge, 800-1200 yards), and Surlingham (Norwich, 45 yard smallbore and black powder, plus we have a PSG shoot.

It's a really good, well run, friendly club

You could nominate a superior officer from work to act as your character referee, provided they have known you for at least 2 years, are not related to you and are of good personal standing.

Expense for applying is nominal, just £50 currently, but I have heard this may be increasing in the near future.

The statutory period is three months. Any longer than that would be a discretionary issue to take up with the club.

3 months is for the statuary probationary period, the grant of and FAC can take from 3 weeks to several months.

A few of us on here have a Canadian friend who came over to fly for one of the budget airlines. He managed to get his FAC on the back of his Canadian licence as long as he joined a club, it was more a transfer and he brought a few of his toys over with him later, shotguns, S1 shotguns and bolt guns.
This was a few years ago so things may have changed.
