REPUBLICANS GIVING IN TO SHERIFFS ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE BILL

Joni Railey is the latest victim, shot in the head with a shotgun. How many more must die before the NC Sheriffs' Association stops worrying about its "power" and endorses a "sheriff shall issue" self-defense bill?

NO MORE DELAYS: VOTE IS TOMORROW

To give us one last chance to appeal to wavering Republicans, voting has once again been delayed on HB 1311, "Domestic Victims Empowerment Act", and is now scheduled for TOMORROW, Tuesday, May 24th.  Word has it that Republicans have been intimidated by the NC Sheriffs' Association into supporting the weaker "may issue" language.  It is vital that this language be strengthened to encourage sheriffs to issue permits.  
Currently there is no real incentive for a county sheriff to issue "emergency" permits.  Fears of liability cripple sheriffs from taking action and empowering victims to protect themselves.  

Tell Republicans in the NC House that sheriffs must, then be held accountable for leaving innocent women helpless before their attackers by denying them reasonable permits.

Dear North Carolina House Representative:

As NC Sheriffs worry about their egos, our North Carolina women continue to die: On Sunday, it was Joni Railey, making seven dead in less than two weeks.  Now is not the time to become weak.  Now is the time for leadership.  The people of North Carolina want EFFECTIVE protection for potential victims of domestic violence.  Do NOT back down from the NC Sheriffs' Association.  Stronger language is needed to help victims of domestic violence protect themselves.

Are you prepared to exercise this kind of leadership and support HB 1311 in a stronger form than the current ineffective language forced upon you by the sheriffs?

It is time for this legislative body to decide whether the higher priority lies in preserving sheriffs' power, or in preventing murder.
