Question all, I'm in the process of buying a piece of land in NH and I currently live in the people's republic of NY. I normally take the following route's 684 -84- 91. (NY-CT- MA-VT) takes roughly 3.5 hrs to get to my place. The only other way i know of is 87 north to rt 9 and then a long ass ride across VT. I have pistol license for NY and as soon as the property purchase finishes I will apply for NH permit. I also have my AR and my M1A that would make the trip. Am I stuck going the long ass way? I think the hang up would be Mass.........Any input would be appreciated.

Well first off congrats on your move. Where in NH are going to? I'm moving to Farmington in Feb. Your guns will certainly appreciate the move too. Since now they can be brought to "No-Ban" status. Second, I would THINK that your best option would be to call the MA State Police and see what they require. Rather than working on our beliefs or thoughts. You may want to do it from friends phone...thus no record of YOU calling..in case you don't like the answer they give.

I would suspect though if you field stripped your weapons, stored them in a locked box with ammo seperate or not even in the car/truck would work. Another peice of advice, drive the speed limit if you travel through mass, be a polite, nice driver who minds his own buniness(not saying you aren't) and you should be fine. This is how I have done it for the three years I have lived in RI and went home to ME/NH to shoot with family. Good luck and welcome to New England.

Traveling interstate is no issue through CT.

Cite:  CGS Sec 29-38d.  Interstate transportation of firearms through state. (a) The provisions of sections 29-35 and 29-38 shall not apply to the interstate transportation of firearms through this state in accordance with 18 USC 926A and 927, as amended from time to time, by any person who is not otherwise prohibited from shipping, transporting, receiving or possessing a firearm. Such person may transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where such person may lawfully possess and carry such firearm through this state to any other place where such person may lawfully possess and carry such firearm provided such transportation is in accordance with subsection (b) of this section.

     (b) During the transportation of a firearm through this state as authorized in subsection (a) of this section, such firearm shall be unloaded and neither such firearm nor any ammunition being transported shall be readily accessible or directly accessible from the passenger compartment of the vehicle. If the vehicle does not have a compartment separate from the passenger compartment, such firearm shall be unloaded and such firearm and any ammunition being transported shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.

     (c) No person who is transporting a firearm through this state in accordance with this section may use or carry such firearm or sell, deliver or otherwise transfer such firearm while in this state.

     (P.A. 99-212, S. 3.)

CarbRage - You may also want to look into getting a non-res CT Permit to Carry Pistols or Revolvers.  It is effectively shall issue, nominal fee and allows you to CCW through the state.  MA also issues non-resident temporary LTCs for 100 bones and good for one year.

If your M1A and AR are NY legal, chances are they are legal to possess in CT, unless the AR is a "Colt AR15" or "Colt Sporter."

Just signed the deal on the Acreage in Sullivan county NH. My AR is a Colt.... My M1A does not have the bayonet lug on it so I guess It's NY legal I.....I bought it a few years ago when they had a deal where you get there scope for +75 bucks, I haven't had a chance to use it since we had a tannerite issue at my friends place in upstate NY......
I guess I'll be making some phone calls and apply for the non resident pistol licenses.....I didn’t know that Mass would issue out of state license....
thanks for the info guys

Unless you plan on stopping in MA (NOT a good idea), don't waste your money (course $$ + LTC @ $100/year) on getting a MA LTC. Yes they issue them, but you do NOT need one to transport THRU the state. MA recognizes FOPA (unlike parts of NY and NJ).

Keep guns locked up unloaded, separate from ammo, in the trunk and you are good to go (thru MA).

We also don't strip search drivers and their cars for defective tail lights or speeding in MA, unlike some Southern states.

DO NOT tell anyone (LE) that you have guns in the car if you do get stopped. It's not relevant and if you do tell, now you may well subject yourself to further scrutiny, a request for a search, etc. In MA, many/most believe that only criminals have guns, so don't shock them and try to educate them!

Enjoy your place in a free state.
