Three Hayden High School cheerleaders were killed and four others were injured Thursday night in a traffic accident near Hayden in Blount County, state troopers said this morning.
The accident happened shortly after 9 p.m. about 10 miles east of Hayden on Alabama 160.
The seven teenagers were cheerleaders at Hayden High. They were returning from gymnastics training in Oneonta when the wreck happened.
The victims were identified as Sarah Casey, Courtney Niceley and Whitney Bradford. All were 17 years old. The injured, all 17, were listed as Sarah Agee, who was taken to St. Vincent's East; and Brittany Lovejoy and Ariel Niblett, who were taken to UAB Hospital. Alexandria Thomas, age 16, was also injured and taken to Children's Hospital where she was listed in good condition.
Agee was treated and released from St. Vincent East. Lovejoy and Niblett both are listed in fair condition at UAB.
All the seats were taken in the waiting room at UAB Hospital's North Pavilion this morning as students came in to support their injured friends and grieve their losses.
All Hayden High School athletic events have been canceled until the last funeral has been held, school officials said.
God does not die on the day when we cease to believe in a personal deity, but we die on the day when our lives cease to be illumined by the steady radiance, renewed daily, of a wonder, the source of which is beyond all reason.
