Anyone else doing a Thanksgiving morning hunt today?

Not today the wife has me on oven duty...
But me and Sadie (the dog) will be out hunting Pheasants in the AM tomorrow... |

I will not surrender..
|
Just got back from filling the feeders. May take my youngest out tomorrow for his first experience. I figure he will do way better in the blind before he really gets into it and can handle sitting still in a stand.

Nothing moving this morning but the weather wasn’t horrible. Rain held off until 9am, not too cold for almost December. |

I may hunt a spot Saturday morning that I probably won’t hit until later in gun week.

How long you guys let a spot "rest" between uses?

My buddy found his deer this morning! Thankfully it was cold overnight and the coyotes didn't find it first. Public land monster.

I only worry about letting a stand rest if I get busted by a deer. If so, I just move to a different one for a couple days. I am very conscious of scent control and not doing anything to make my presence obvious to the wildlife.

It’s made a huge improvement on my hunts. - All gear stays outside now (used to stay in the basement). - Started showering with Dead Down Wind (DDW) products including anti-perspirant before every hunt, religiously. - Wash my gear every other week in DDW laundry detergent and air dry in the garage. - Each hunt gets a misting of DDW field spray. I have had bucks 10yds off my stand downwind and they never even lifted their nose in suspicion. I thought for sure I was going to be busted. I have been very very very impressed with the results and it’s been one of the single greatest improvements to my hunts. |

Thank you @Digital_Chaos View Quote @PKT1106 The deer management permits are only good from the 25th of September to the 28th of November. if you are a land owner you can apply for a deer nuisance permit. Kinda hard to get from what I hear. Go here to start Deer management permits may be used to take antlerless deer. The permits are valid on private land statewide from Sept. 25 to Nov. 28, 2021. Deer management permits are not valid on public lands, except Kill - deer Plains and Lake La Su An wildlife areas, and authorized controlled hunts. Hunters are not required to buy an eithersex deer permit before purchasing a deer management permit |

45-70.
Checked the zero on my 450BM AR and launched my SiCo hybrid 46. No baffle strike. But it appears something wrong with the locking collar / flash hider fit. As this is not the first time this can has flow. Fortunately the Hybrid flies as well as someone could throw a hotdog. So it went about 15 feet and impaled into the ground. And now need to order a new locking collar for the hybrid. Trusty 45-70 though… |

Not much shaking this morning.
Had two deer (not together) walking in on thermal scope, both at over 500yds, both up and moving around. Around 8:30am I had two bucks come through, one 3pt and the other a 4pt. Soon after they went over the hill they must have jumped two does becuse they came through the opposite way running. That’s all she wrote for this morning. |

I sat until 1 and didn't see anything. It was the quietest opening morning I've ever heard. I think I heard three shots by 8am.
I had to run a couple errands and will be back out for the last couple hours. |

My current view
![]() I was out this morning too in a different stand. Had a deer stroll by at 6:55, but couldn't make out if it was a buck/doe. Too early to shoot anyway. I heard 1 shot far away about 7:15 and that was it. Trying out a new stand now. Neighbor headed south for gun season and said I could use it. 20' up overlooking field, next to 60 acres of woods. The only issue is that the woods you see on the right is a 10 acre strip owned by people who won't let anyone in to track, but will happily trespass and sit in stands on other neighbors land ![]() |

Spent my lunch break setting up my blind. Debating on going out for a doe, not sure if I will but I think having the option is the way to go.
Didn’t hear a single shot though today. |
|
|
I heard a couple shots towards the end of legal shooting time. I walked out and got to my truck with a few minutes to spare and saw a doe and yearling walking into the field I was hunting.
I'll be working the rest of the week so I'll be able to hit my stand for the evening hunt just about every night. |

After missing twice at 30 yards (last one on Friday morning), a black Friday sale got me and I upgraded crossbows. Running out of hunting opportunities I ended up taking down a doe last night with the new crossbow. I was going to take one of the littles out with me, but both came down with something, makes me kind of sad I couldn't include them.
Now that the pressure is off, I may refill the feeder and see if I can grab another in January, but December shut it's door on me already. |

Thought I missed at first, jumped 4 feet in the air and took off like nothing happened. Then it piled up in some laurel making the worst growling sounds I've ever heard in the wild. When I got to it, a hit was obvious. More than a fist sized hole in its chest and a piece of the jacket or something nearly sliced it's front leg off. Maybe a 3/8" piece of skin was the only thing hold its leg. Amazingly tough animals. I somewhat regret not paying out the ass to have it mounted. |

Between the specs of this and my boss's 4 year old TenPoint, they are near identical, but he paid more than 50% more. |
