I posted a thread in the GD yesterday to see what states would be nice to move to if I were to leave Virginia, and Tennessee was one of those states which I felt I should research further.

From what I understand:

- Excluding some urban areas, the state is rather conservative
- Open/Concealed Carry is legal
- All NFA items are legal
- So AWB, mag cap restrictions, etc.

So now that I have a bit of a primer on TN, I want to dive deeper into it.  Tell me about things like taxes, culture, activities, job availability (I work in IT), good areas to live (price-wise as well as culture-wise).

Also, give me any links which I can scour to get more information.  Right now I'm just sort of doing research (as I am with some other states) so anything you can provide me would be appreciated!

Thanks!

If you want an IT job, more than likely you will have to live in or around an urban area.

East TN if you can swing it.

I live in Memphis and am also in IT FWIW.

I moved to East TN from VA.  Greater Knoxville area......nothing but love it.
Gun Friendly,
No income tax
Sales tax is pretty high (around 9%)
Conveniently located near I-75 and I-40.
Lower cost of living than many places
Real Estate prices vary by area
Decent public education system overall
Plenty of outdoors stuff to do (hiking, climbing, boating, fishing, hunting, 4 wheelin')
Active SCCA chapter if ya like to race
Job market is hit or miss, but isn't it always.

I guess they didn't want me to give away our secret.
Stay Far Away!!!

Come to Memphis.  We have a low crime rate, honest politicians, excellent schools, great weather (never to hot or humid), beautiful scenery in the metro area, hundreds of public shooting ranges, and it rains money every other Thursday.  Plenty of things to see and do.

A helluva place to start is maybe Hank's basement? Live there rent free for 3-4 years, save your money for ammo & whatnot.

Seriously, each region of the state has about the same thing: big cities, small cities, lakes, rivers, etc. What separates them is topography, IMO. West TN is much flatter, thus more areas of fields. East TN is obviously the mountainous region. Middle TN is a combo of the both, which is probably why the majority of the population lives there.

No clue on the IT job.

What do you do in IT?  People use the term "IT" to mean hardware and software.

I am a programmer.  We are always hiring the right people.

I have some, but little, programming experience.  Have done web design for a while, but though I'm knowledgeable and mostly capable in doing it, I have no "professional" experience with it.  My past five years of "professional experience" has been in the realm of Information Assurance (IT Security).  Have a CompTIA Security+ certification and eyeing the CISSP, but honestly, I don't much care for certifications.  They're a poor measure of one's capabilities.  I mean, I got my CCNA at 18 (since expired) without any kind of experience - just studied...
