Stupid question about hunting rifles

I'm looking to get another (inexpensive) 30-06 for my brother and/or father to use on our hunting trips up north. I keep seeing Long Action and Short Action, and I don't know what the difference is? An help?

Short action is like .308
Long action is 30-06
it just depends on how long the cartrige is.

Thanks. I figured it was the length of the cartridge, but I just didn't know for sure.

I've got a couple hunting rifles, I know how they work, and that's about it.

Okay now that I've been schooled on Mikes action....

Lets get back to the legality of silencers in MN. It hasn't been brought up in a couple hours.
