Hello,

Quick question, I have searched high and low about this and don't know what I should do.  I have searched about transporting my guns in my vehicle in Illinois, I'm good on that.  But it is illegal for a non-resident to store guns in a rental storage unit temporarily, while I search for a place to live?

I will be moving to Northern Illinois in a few months north of the Great Lakes base, but I will have to store all my household items in storage until I find a place to live.

Appreciate the reply, yea I've read through that already and it didn't seem specific enough.  The only thing that comes close is the section about keeping it in your hotel room.  The pistol and rifle that I am bring are already disassembled and inoperable.  I'll give the ISP a call and see what they say.

I'd be hesitant to leave my guns in a storage unit due to security. If you have a safe, I'd use it.

Oh I am, but I do have a safe..........just don't have a place to live.  So the safe will be in the storage unit as well.

Sir,
Most places will not allow firearms/ammo to be stored there.
When you sign the contract for the rental, that will be buried in the fine print somewhere. If you go ahead and do it, you'll find that their insurance company will NOT cover any loss, and that may lead to other litigation (both criminal and civil) if you report them stolen/missing. Moving companies are the same way.
I'd advise you to leave them behind, and have an FFL in Texas ship them to an FFL up in your area.
I think you'll find the expense is offset by the peace of mind.

I dont' know about anywhere else, but maxon's (in des plaines) offers firearm storage.  I think it's around $5-$10 per month for storage.

Aside from the theft and insurance issues, there's also rust issues to worry about... unless you plan to pay out the ass for a climate-controlled storage unit.  Hell, I'd offer to stick them in my safe for you... but I'm all the way in the south 'burbs and my safe is packed.

I would have someone you trust hold the firearms until you have a permanent residence.   Then I would have them ship them to you.  If that is not an option, I would find someone I trust in your new area and ask them to hold the firearms for you.

I would only keep them in a storage unit as a last resort.   Alot of things are stolen from the storage units.

None of the storage places I have ever used (both were large national chains) had any sort of clause against firearms.

In a month or so, Gun World Range in Lombard will be re-opening at its brand new site and they will be renting storage space for firearms in their safes or your own safe. This would be perfect for you, because your guns will be very secure within a gun safe within a gun store with its burglary alarms active.

Check out the website for more info on the Grand Opening Day: http://www.gunworldrange.com/

Contact Barry or Tony at Gun World by email. They may be taking storage reservations already.

Hope this helps.
