I happened to be driving down Division last night by Cabrini and noticed that one of the high-rises was being torn down.  Course, just east from there they are throwing up $300K fenced in condos.

Whats really happening is ,they are tearing down all the projects. those people are going to the suburbs where the rents are cheaper. Hence the drop in crime in the city and rise in crime in the suburbs. This is especially happening on the south side called the "Gap Area" Prime lake front property. they have tried to do this for years ,but Herold Washington was in office at the time. But now that Daley is in office its happening. You don't see much about it on the news, but the hole area has changed. Doesn't look so much like a war zone anymore.

I agree with that to a certain extent.  They opened up a brand new strip mall just east of Cabrini Green with a 24-hour Dominick's, a Blockbuster, Pearl Vision, etc....  all Yuppie type stores to service the condos going up right next door.

Go two blocks west though and the old high rises are still there looking as crappy as ever.  I could clearly see fire damage to one of the lower floors spread soot up about five floors directly above.  But they will all be torn down eventually as the neighborhood gentrifies and the former residents relocate to the near suburbs.

There's also the new police station right in the middle of Cabrini to prevent anyone's precious golf clubs from being stolen...  

They're calling it a "Mixed Income Zone".
Large numbers of "townhouses" are being put up and purchased by naive upper-income yuppies, while the townhouse next door might house a Cabrini resident who is living there with government subsidies.

It's yet another social experiment along the lines of what Cabrini was, only instead of making it a poverty concentration camp, they're playing hard on the abject naiveté of liberal whites who are willing to buy into such areas because they're 'diverse' and 'exciting'.

"Urban Pioneers" is probably the most apt and accurate statement i've heard in a long time. Only instead of being people of great resource and understanding, they're idiots who have no idea what they're in for.

They still believe it's 'just a skin color' since all they've ever known is the safety of their parents house in Naperville.

I've always wondered about what might happen to poor Hegewisch in ten or fifteen years.
It's pretty much the last white, blue collar holdout on the Southside in the city limits proper but all of the old people are dying off and the young ones are moving away.
The problem is that you can still buy a house there for $120K, which is affordable to the 'undesirables'.

I have a feeling that we'll be writing a requium for Hegewisch very soon as areas up north are gentrified by the "Urban Pioneers" and the natives need to find cheap real estate in the city limits...

You must have been from Hegewisch or near by there. I grew up on the East Side and know very well what you are talking about. I now live in Lansing.hug.gif
