....KOMO "news" radio this early AM and they started "reporting" that there was a house fire in Snohomish.  Now what made this fire special was that there were "reports" of <gasp> ammunition in the house.  Because there were reports of ammunition, they were cautioning the public to NOT drive by.

Now, I don't normally listen to this drivel, but is this the norm over there?

Contrary to popular belief (and the movies), ammunition does not "shoot" when cooked in a fire. The brass case detonates. It's not more dangerous to "drive by" unless all the rounds are all chambered in rifles that are all pointed at the street. I hate morons who report the "news".

Here's a link... just to show off that it can be done by a dumb guy with teddy bears and not as "manly" as 1GUNdRUNNER

Fire crews arrived to find a mobile home ablaze and a large amount of ammunition popping and exploding inside the home as it burned.

Fire crews fought the blaze from the outside due to the ammunition exploding inside the mobile home.

...It was pretty scary."

When I was in Iraq during Desert Storm, EOD was blowing Iraqi (Russian) T-72 tanks to destroy them.

I distinctly remember the 125mm rounds cooking off at night from the fires still burning inside the tanks.

While I'm not certain it can't happen with ammo, I wouldn't wager my life on it.

I guarantee those 125mm rounds cooking off may have sounded scary. They may have sent shrapnel over your heads. But they weren't going to come and blow you up without a working barrel for propulsion.

Of course.

Nobody has ever been killed by shrapnel.

Hear, hear.  I have several copies, including a copy signed by the General himself.

That was back when experiments would be performed when the answer wasn't known instead of merely guessing or repeating folklore.

I think my favorite experiment remains the "which way will a bullet land when fired straight up".

My former department handled the topic that loose ammo was of very little to no danger.
