Tis true that Austin is not Texas but that is the way I feel about the rest of Texas east of the Pecos. Now the laws regarding firearms are more reasonable in Texas than PRK. I think you will find Texas more amenable to your firearm needs.

Welcome to Austin.

We have a gun show on the third weekend of every month.  There is also a dinner gathering of the Austin arfcom crowd on the saturday evening of that weekend.

Our range facilities aren't great, but there are places to shoot.

With regards to gun laws, you should get a CHL as soon as you are eligible.  This simplifies some of the legal arguments about when/where you can carry.  It also eliminates the need for a NICS background check when you purchase a firearm.

If you have any specific Austin questions (gun related or not), there are quite a few of us on the board.  Don't hesitate to drop any of us an IM.

The Gun Store is in Cedar Park (the first NW suburb) in a little mall at the corner of 183 and Buttercup Creek.  Dave, the owner, is "good people", and is always incredibly tolerant of my sitting in his store for an hour and asking questions.

There are a number of other gun stores in the Austin area.

Heritage Firearms

McBrides

Not exclusively gun stores, but well stocked:

Cabellas

Sportsman's Warehouse

Join the Austin Rifle Club.  Nice facilities, reasonable dues and you can shoot all you want!  Coming from SoCal, you'll like it here in Austin. Substantially more liberal than the rest of Texas (hence, "It ain't Texas"), but we have them surrounded, and it's better to have them all in one place than dispersed....

Where in town did you move to?  That'll have a bearing on where to go shoot...

West of town is Eagle Peak, but I've heard that the owner is an oddball (I've never been there tho)... East of town is the Austin Rifle club - it's the only place in the area that I'm aware of that doesn't charge by the trip (annual dues only).

Cabelas and Sportsman Warehouse will destroy your budget on ammo and reloading supplies... tread carefully, and make sure you have all your firearms you want first....  I've made a few drives from Houston to Buda just for some killer ammo/reloading deals vs. waiting and shipping

Are you thinking of Hill Country Rifle?  Richard is definitely a little different than most people.  None of the people I've met out at Eagle Peak seem weird.  They are, unfortunately, very serious about the "1 second between shots" and "no FMJ on the rifle range" rules.

The only thing SoCal has that I wish Texas had is Pioneer Fried Chicken.  That being said, Popeye's is just fine.

Welcome to Texas.  If you're in Austin, please send some of your NoCal brethren home.

I'm off 2222 near Mopac (loop 1, which doesn't loop).  Welcome to Texas.

This thread is really interesting.  My new neighbors with Cali.  License plates showed up for a couple of days and then disappeared.  Did not even move in any furniture that I can see.

Would you happen to have two fluffy dogs by chance?

I'm just across Mansfield damn on hwy 620 in Lakeway. BTW:There is a pretty good take-out BBQ place right at the intersection of FM2222 and 620.

GREAT.  More Kalifornians coming to Austin.

j/k

Come on down to one of the monthly dinners and meet some of the locals.   It's hit or miss who shows up and how many of us... it's always said that getting the Austin crew together is like herding cats...

We are in Steiner Ranch also....and we have two dogs but they are NOT fluffy...We will  be getting our TX plates soon I hope.  I visited the Gun Store up in Cedar park today.  Nice and helpful.  Didn't realize I would have to wait 90 days to to buy anything though! I wont have much availability at all in January, but early feb I should have more time and definately want to visit the gun shows and meet the crowd.

BTW what other stores stock good selections of AR's and accessories.  I thought the stock at the store I went to today was slim...but maybe that's how it is.  I remember the good old days back in Cal at Sherwoods or National or even BnB that had so much you'd spend two hours just browsing.  Sherwood was like visiting a Military outpost with all the new and GI stuff they sold.  That was back when the Galil was on the shelves next to the Colt Sporters.

I think Texas is more my kinda town...Although I am a Cal native and Never lived anywhere else, the pace is much more tolerable and getting used to everyone being nice is pure culture shock.

ORinTX :
I think it was...Were you at the counter....I checked out the AK's but focused on the RRA tactical that was on the wall.  I think I interuppted your conversation.  I asked about all the requirements than found out I had to wait 90 to establish residency....I think I was wearing a Texas UT hat....

DVDtracker:

Thats what the guy at the counter said.  90 days and bring in a phone bill or something to prove I have been in TX for at least 90.  McBrides had told me just to get a TX license than all was OK.  So I am getting conflicting info.

I am tempted to just get a new RRA tactical upper and the 6 pos. butstock, grip and Aimpoint sight....I don't know If I can wait 90 days to buy a complete rifle....I'll just mod my Bushy and then send my current upper to have the barrel threaded for a flash hider!

You guys overreact.  I have not shot a dog since Sunday. (Unless coyotes count)

As for the 90 day requirement,  you are good to go with a TX DL.  Polydude was buying guns within two weeks of moving here.

You're a good sport JIA, and coyotes ARE dogs. [insert TRG avatar here]

Red's has a "membership" option which you don't have to pay per-trip, although it isn't cheap (though less expensive than paying per hour if you shoot as much and as often as I do).

Whether its within the "letter of the law" or not, it seems to be de-facto true.  I've never known anywhere to question anyone about time of residency who had a TX DL.  Basically all they really want off it is the DL # for the 4473.

The Elmer Fudd rules at Eagle Peak keep me away from the place.  A large percentage of what I shoot is milsurp ammo, and even with bolt actions like Mosins and Mausers, a second between shots is pretty stifling at times.

I've also read some about Hill Country Rifle, but not experienced it first hand.  The biggest concern for me given its at least a 45 minute to hour drive from where I live is apparently the hours of operation are erratic.  People have reported showing up at times they'd found it open before like Saturday mornings to find it closed.

Mostly its due to sheer convenience that I mostly shoot at Red's North...  its 1.7 miles from my house and it is reliably open 9am-9pm 7 days except major holidays...  "Tactical" people won't like the rules there either, but they are more reasonable than a lot of places.

Well I did get out to Eagle peak with ORinTX whom graciously let me shoot his "Toys" and found the range fine...I am just glad to be able to openly talk about AR's let alone handle them in public without feeling like a leper!

I hope to find other ranges as well!!!

I think BRD has hit me pretty hard, I've already made more purchases than I should have and am looking forward to my first bit of LaRue Kit!

Hell, I'm only a few miles from Eagle Peak...I'd have joined you guys had I known.  By the way, Sportsmans Finest is a store that everyone seems to forget...it's not that terribly far from you either, and they have a pretty good collection of class 3 stuff if you are ever interested.
