I'm in the north, and voted on the first available day.
No issues at all here in Douglas County.

What's the verdict on the CC voting machine problems?
Fluke? (Even though it happened to several people)
SEIU scheme?
Dem. dirty tricks?

Anyone know how many machines suffered this "error"?

What is being done, or can be done, to ensure this is fixed immediately?

When I Early Voted the other day in Las Vegas, I pressed one electronic button for a candidate, and another candidate's name immediately was displayed on my screen. Good thing I caught it and corrected my vote. I didn't think anything about it until I saw the news report of the same stuff happening in Boulder City.

I am not an eldery citizen (no offense to old folks, I'll be old some day), and my fingers didn't linger too long on the touch-screen (I do know how to properly touch anything stupid).

We need to get back to paper ballots.

That is all.

What we need to do is get a qualified software developer (not freakin deibold) to put together a simple damn device that can record data. We do millions of encrypted bank transactions involving millions and millions of dollars every day in this country, yet we can't put together a god damn fraud proof voting machine.
People can use atm's without screwing it up, and that technology is dated. We would eliminate all chances for fraud if we went 100% electronic, and made all source code available for public scrutiny.
Paper involves people, and people can be paid for...

My machine only malfunctioned once. In the U.S. Senate race.

I corrected that shit right away.

Did you report it? I went in with a phone number to report any irregularities after hearing about the preselection issues on the Heidi Harris morning show on KDWN. If there were any bugs I was set to report them right away just like Sharon Angle recommended when she came on the show.

From what I heard at the county, we'll most likely be a mail-in ballot state (like Oregon) for 2012.

If you are referring to me, no I didn't report it.

Like I said earlier, I didn't think anything of it at the time. Then, I saw the Boulder City story.

If you forcibly push the double eraser pencil thingy into a resistive tech touch screen hard enough, you can damage the fine grid and cause that spot to connect and mark.

Since the ones I've used here us a pencil eraser, they are most likely resistive technology.

Sooo, if some SEIU thug pushed really hard with the pencil over one of the spots to be touched for one of the Reid dynasty folks, it could possibly force the machine to check that spot if it corresponded with a valid location.

Kinda makes you go hmmmmn...

I'll check into it.

I'll just vote again (and again).

I'm an Illegal, I'm Dead, and a I'm a Felon.

Oh and BTW: I am a member of SEIU.

Care to share that number?  I'm voting tomorrow and want to have it just in case.

That's interesting. Not only that, but if you made a different selection the screen could potentially switch it back, making it look like malicious programming when it's really just a screen defect.

Whether its a defect or malicious programming, if you dont double check against the printed copy and you vote for the wrong guy, it makes you a fucking idiot or Floridian.

Yup.  I voted and didn't have any issues with the machine, but I double checked the votes displayed on the screen before I went to the next one and I reviewed everything on the paper record as well.

When the paper copy prints, your vote is a done deal.

Nope. The machine specifically tells you to check the paper copy to the left for accuracy before it scrolls it up out of sight.

One actually has three opportunities to confirm their vote display.
1) The actual selection for the individual race
2) A summary of all your votes on the screen that shows your selections and then you can make corrections by selecting the race in question.
3) The printout of your choices prior to your "Cast Vote" selection, where you still have the opportunity to make changes

The touch screens can be very sensitive to light pressure, I'm not sure of the technology as to whether it's pressure sensitive or relies on "capacitance" similar to how some elevator buttons work.

It should be noted that most of the workers on the early voting teams are NOT regular county employees, but apply for what is actually a temporary job. My wife worked on early voting teams for about 3-4 years and she never saw any "funny stuff" going on. I can assure you that she is a conservative republican.  She was always commenting on how various unions would arrive at a site and unload a whole group of voters who had their marching orders on how to vote, she thinks that is the real problem. Now the team leads at the various locations are full time county employees and some of them may not work in the election department, so it's possible that these folks are SEIU members.

My own take is that while it is possible that there are some shenanigans going on because one never really knows, I think that there is really nothing sinister going on.  The ultimate responsibility is for the voter to check their selections at the opportunities mentioned above and pay careful attention to what you are doing.  Don't be a Florida voter that gets confused by butterfly ballots and the like.

I was disappointed that Mr. Lomax stated that they had resolved the problems that were reported in Boulder CIty but never went into detail as to what they were or how they were fixed.

Hornman is correct. You have three chances to verify. The printed record is your last chance. The printed record can be compared to the end result of the electronic tabulation for verification (a lot of manual work). The print record comes in handy for recounts and challenges. This process has many check points. It may not be perfect, but it is still better than paper tabulation when you are dealing with several hundred thousand votes. Volunteer to work the election. You will appreciate the effort the Lomax, Clark County Staff, and volunteers put into the effort. It's good we keep them on their toes and it's good the be vigilant. There will always be attempts to cheat.
Oh ya, I am a volunteer.
God Bless the USA!!!
