I know there are virtually no inoor areas where smoking is allowed in NYC. However, I read in a travel guide that smoking is allowed in NO public places. Does this mean you can't smoke on the street either? How about in the state and over in New Jersey?

In NYS you just can not smoke in public buildings. Outside is fine

In Jersey, you can smoke out on the street and on the casino floors in Atlantic City, but not anywhere else. Not even in the bars and restaurants in the casinos. Just on the gambling floor.

Like they say, $$$ talks and bullshit walks

Of course you can still smoke in your own home and for the time being, in your own car.
But give the asshats in Trenton some time and they'll fix that one too.

I personally don't think legislators are asshats for outlawing smoking in public places, especially bars and restaurants. In fact, I'm quite happy they've done it.

I'm just trying to obey the laws. I don't want to get shot by a trigger-happy NYC cop for lighting up. Can I smoke on the street in NYC?

Have to be 19 years old to buy cig's in suffolk county now. Which is stupid cause you go to the next county over in nassau and by them. Not that that really matters but it just goes to show how stupid NY can be! I can't wait to get out of here one day.

Also be warned of the cost of a pack of cigarettes in NYC. They imposed some hefty taxes a while ago. I dont smoke, but I remember seeing packs for around $8 or so. Maybe more?

there are some exceptions. Bar's and restaurants can in theory get waivers from the county health departments if they can prove the ban has cost them a higher enough percentage of business
and bars that were registered as cigar bars before the ban got excempted

but generally speaking pgfd195 is correct, any place of business or other public building is off limits.

i kinda like the no smoking in bars and resturants. didn't really matter in the resturants cause i would always sit in a no smoking section. but as far as the bars, whenever my band would have a show, i'd come home smelling like sweat mixed with second hand smoke and spilt beer even though i don't drink or smoke. needless to say it effected the time with the girlfriend

Yeah you do smell pretty nasty. Try sleeping with a bartender and trying to get some as soon as she came home. That sucks.

I dunno, I can smell one cig a mile away...... and while im eating = vomit

"non-smoking section" Is kinda like having a "peeing section" in a pool if you ask me...

But anyway, I'm glad there is no more smoking in bars/rest., but still people occasional do it anyway. And it just takes one clown to start everyone whipping out the cigs.

i didn't say i liked it when people smoked in resturants... i grew up with both my parents blowing smoke in my face till was 18 and left for college. then every person i met smoked...so i have been around it since before i was even born.

while at a resturant, as long as i'm not in a cloud of it, i can deal with it.

Whats the difference it's one year. If there gonna smoke at 19 what does it matter if they smoke at 18. Pointless! Loss of money for the county. It's not like an 18 year old cant get there hands on cig's.
