Anyone know of some decent gunsmiths in the San Antonio area that offer pinning and welding that are reasonable in price (under$100), don't take three weeks, and do a better job than a monkey on LSD?

Made a few calls and got prices from $125 up to $170. We hear about all the horror stories here but never the good jobs that are done.

I don't know of anyone in San Antonio.  I'm sending a barrel to Morgan up in Dallas for a cut down, re-thread and then pin a muzzle device.  He quoted me $65 to cut, crown and re-thread.  Then $40 to pin and weld if no indexing is needed.  If indexing is needed, I think he's another $30.  He has great feedback for cut and re-thread jobs.  I'm going to send my barrel next week.  I will let you know how it turns out.

I decided to silver solder method. I have experience soldering electronics, so I'm pretty sure I can do this. I ordered some silver solder off Amazon for $18 and I already have a good blowtorch. I drilled a hole in the muzzlebrake and partway through the threads and snapped off the drill bit. So, it should work as the pin.

Do you still need a pin with the silver solder?  Let me know how it works out for you, I may go that route for attaching the muzzle device instead of welding.

It is better to have it and not need it than to not have it and the ATF decide to fuck with you. I am not sure is the muzzle brake can be wrenched off alone, but I know for damn sure a pin plus silver solder and it ain't coming off.

Hell, if you use JB Weld and a pin, it isn't coming off no matter what you do. JB Weld is fantastic stuff. I have used it to fix many things. I has see the steel next to the repair fail before the JB Weld. As long as you prep the surface per the instructions, it is permanent. Unfortunately, it isn't an authorized method of permanently attaching a muzzle brake.
