So, how do they work? Metrocards..Bus passes
I will be visiting my dad in Danbury for a week in August and will be commuting to the city several times with friends. Now, the trouble is I have found conflicting reports on how much Metrocards and bus passes cost, as well as what they will grant me access to. Please give me all good information. THANKS!

The Metrocards are cheap, I can't remember how much I paid to ride all day last time I was down there. I want to say $7-8 or so.

Depends on how much you are riding

Standard card is $2.25 per ride, you load the card with as much money as you want.  If you put more than $8 on a card you get 15% bonus.  Free transfer from bus to subway and vice versa.

An all-you-can-swipe is $8.25 for a one day unlimited and $27 for a weekly.

To use just make sure the "metro card" logo is facing you (the side with the magnetic strip) and swipe forward.

Swipe like you want to get in.  I see many people swiping slowly as if they think the machine will read the card easier if they swipe slowly.  If you swipe too fast or too slow, the turnstile will tell you to swipe faster or slower.

If you turnstile say "swipe again," do it.  If it says "swipe again at this turnstile,"  DO NOT try switching turnstiles.  It has already partially read and deducted the fare, but needs to reread the card.  I've seen far too many people lose their fare by switching turnstiles.

Avoid buying "single ride" metrocards.  They are made of cheap paper and tend to malfunction quite often.

If you buy a card and are paying by ride ($2.25 per fare), and are planning to use this for multiple people (ie 10 dollar card), you can only use the card for 4 fares at a time, no matter how much money is on the card.  IE you have $22.50 and are trying to awipe in 5 people, only 4 will be able to get in.  The 5th person will need to wait 18 minutes before the card can be used again, so if you have 5 or more people in your group you will need at least 2 cards.

If you buy an unlimited card, and plan on using it for your family, each person will have to wait 18 minutes before they can use the card.
