[ARCHIVED THREAD] - SKS front sight removal

Bud (some of you know him) needs to get the front sight off of the barrel of his kids SKS.

He says he got the pin out (for indexing?) but it still seems stuck.

Is it silver soldered on, or ???

(I haven't actually seen it up close... he called and asked me to ask you guys, after someone @ Oly Arms told him to smack it off with a hammer.... we both agreed that a second opinion was in order.)

Did he forget his password?

Go more than half way down (ignoring all the chit chat) and they show some instructions for removing the front sight:

Is he changing the whole post or just the sight?

I don't own an SKS or know the answers but I think that might help find the answer.

I think it was quicker & easier to call me, than use his ultra slow dial up connection. He swears he'll get on when they can get a faster connection at their home.

If he is changing out the whole base then this guy seems to think heat is required.

I'll call him and verify, but I'm pretty sure he was talking about the whole base, just as in the second link you posted describes.

He's basically sporterizing it for his son, by milling off some of the bayonet & grenade shit off of the barrel

But he cant get to one area he needs to without removing the front sight base.... as far as I understood anyhow.

Speeking if SKS front sights... Does anybody know Where I can get a replacment... the entire base on the end of the barrel.

Honestly dunno. C&R has never even been on my map.

"If" must be the keyword.

If this is dangerous ground, someone IM me pronto. (though "sporterizing" may have been a very poor choice of term, for what I meant)

If a C&R rifle is modified from its original configuration it is no longer considered C&R.
You can do anything you want [within the legal realm] with a C&R firearm...It just loses its status as a Curio and Relic.
