UNION-TRIBUNE

April 26, 2004

A 52-year-old woman was shot and killed yesterday in an apparent accident involving her 24-year-old son, San Diego police said.

Police said the son was demonstrating a new laser light attachment to his gun when the weapon discharged, striking his mother. Another male family member witnessed the shooting.

Police were called at 4:52 p.m.; the woman died at a hospital less than an hour later.

Detective Kevin Rooney said it appears the shooting was an accident, but the investigation is continuing. "We haven't ruled it as anything yet," Rooney said.

The son and the other family member were being questioned last night.

The woman's son appeared distraught and family and friends consoled one another outside the woman's house on Swan Street near Tooley Street in north Encanto.

"It's just a terrible tragedy when a young man is involved in an accident that kills his mom," Rooney said.

Hmmm, interesting replies.. Bum deal for the guy who shot his mother, that's an accident without a doubt he'll be a basket case over forever. Very unfortunate. It's always aweful when someone/anyone, pays with their life the wage for their own or someone else's stupidity.

1. Demonstrating a laser sight on a loaded firearm.

2. Having finger on trigger of a loaded firearm, when not safe to do so.

3. Pointing loaded (or any, for that matter) firearm at someone.

4. Pulling trigger of a loaded firearm (in conjunction with #3.)

That's four good reasons to call this schmuck an idiot.

I don't have any pity for this person, the firearm did not "go off," the trigger was pulled.

Go directly to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $200.

Sad to hear about the mother, though.
