Senate Bill 433 - Repeals the prohibition against manufacturing, importing, selling, or possessing a sawed-off shotgun. Provides for a 10 year sentence enhancement if a person possesses a sawed-off shotgun in violation of federal law while committing certain offenses. Makes conforming amendments.
Thought it was worth a shot. Emailed my State Senator to support this bill. It would be nice to be rid of this! Find your legislator SB 433 |

Hopefully it will pass this time.
EDIT: There's also a bill introduced to do away with concealed carry permits and allow carry without them. |
|
There are is also a bill to require handgun training, and a seperate bill
To eliminate the need for a handgun permit entirely. The sbs bill seems To have a decent amount of support. If it passes I'll probably buy one. |

Got this back:
Dear EFPETER, I appreciate you taking the time to express your support for Senate Bill 433 regarding the repeal of the ban on short barreled shotguns. Your thoughts and opinions on legislative matters are valuable in my work. Senate Bill 433 has been assigned to the Judiciary Committee, of which I am not a member. This bill is awaiting a hearing at the discretion of the committee chairman Senator Brent Steele. If this bill passes in committee and is to be heard by the Senate, I will keep your thoughts in mind. Thank you for sharing your views with me. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further inquiries. Sincerely, James W. Merritt, Jr. State Senator View Quote |

Steele is my State Senator and is as pro Second Amendment as you'll ever find.

Here's what I sent. I'll modify it appropriately, and send it to Steele. Hope I'm not too little, too late.
Mr. Young, I am in favor of, and urge you to support with your vote, SB 433, to repeal the state-level prohibition against manufacturing, importing, selling, or possessing a sawed-off shotgun. Indiana, is one of a handful of states to still prohibit manufacture and possession of short-barrel shotguns (SBS), which have been registered with the ATF, per the National Firearms Act of 1934 (NFA), to include payment of a one-time $200 tax. Other devices that fall into this category, and are not prohibited in Indiana, so long as they are papered, are short barrel rifles, silencers, and full-auto machine guns. As you are probably aware, legitimate firearms owners pride themselves on being a law-abiding bunch. Owners of NFA eligible firearms, have much more at stake, and subsequently take greater care to ensure compliance. These are the people whose collection and recreation opportunities would be enhanced. Bear in mind, the criminal is a criminal for a reason, and will in no way have his options increased by this bill. He will have a short-barrel shotgun, regardless, because he is by nature a criminal. That this bill will increase his sentence for neglecting the opportunity to obtain his SBS the legal way, should provide motivation for your colleagues who are on the fence, to support this bill as well. Thank you for your time, and I hope I can count on you to make my voice heard. Figley View Quote |

It would be nice if those who can vote this bill into law were allowed to compare a 6" barreled 12ga AOW to a 10" barreled 12ga 870 to see for themselves how useless this prohibition is.

Leave it to the media to once again cast a negative light on firearms. They make it sound like anyone will be able to walk into Wal-Mart and buy them like any other shotgun. No mention of the red tape involved. They're talking about SBS falling into the wrong hands, when all a criminal has to do is take a hacksaw to their existing shotgun.

I think that what he is saying is that if you showed them an AOW shotgun and an SBS, they'd probably ban the AOW instead of legalizing the SBS.

Is there any new information for this bill? I haven't seen anything in a little while.
|

The senate passed it. It was referred to the house on February 6th.
I am not sure if the house is going to do anything? Will the house bill have a different number I'm not finding? |

Hopefully we will see some action soon. |

Here's to hoping. I'll contact my local rep and see if I can get him to support it. I've got some AOW's but would love to form 1 my VEPR.....

The bill passed the House Committee yesterday 12-1, so now it just depends on whether it will come up for a full vote or not.

No matter when it gets signed, and unless otherwise specified, new legislation for Indiana will not take effect until July 1 of the year it is enacted. Therefore, "hurry up and wait" comes to mind. The governor can hurry up all he wants, but it won't be legal until July 1st. Can you apply before then? Maybe, but if it comes across the examiner's desk prior to July 1st then the proper thing is for them to deny the form. |

Outstanding.
Looks like it's time to send some receivers out to get engraved. |

So, if one wanted to check the progress of this, how would one go about it? Is there some one to call, is it listed online, do we have to bribe some one?

How long does the typical bill take to get across his desk? Regardless of when signed, it will not take effect until July 1. So hopefully anytime before July 1 I guess. |
