AK Parts Kit Buy

We have found an online dealer that will give us a deal on 5 or more Romanian kits purchased at once. To be included on the list please PM raysheen with the number of kits that you would like.

Cost is $107 delivered to me for a hand picked new matching numbers kit. This option will probably only be good for those who are in the Rochester area if you want to demil your kit prior to the party...if you don't plan on that then I can just bring them to the party as they come. If you live in the area then we can meet somewhere.

Confirmed Commitments to Buy Romanian Kits
rich219 - 1 kit
raysheen - 2 kits
screen-name - 1 kit
thirsty - 1 kit
SWATsnip3r  - 1 kit

I wont be needing any kits, already have an SA-85 kit that ive been meaning to have built. I will need to get in on the reciever buy as i dont have one of those yet. As for compliance parts does Anyone have a group buy in mind for those or should we go ahead and pick those up individually?

As for the date, I only have my schedule up to mid-late february. I should have my schedule for the end of february/mid march in about 10 days. I know its a little bit ahead of the desired timeframe, but I could do February 17th?

I'd be more than willing to contact a few sources and see about doing a group buy on the compliance parts. Let me know if you guys want me to do this and I'll get on it. How many compliance parts kits do you think we'll need?

raysheen

the bergen rod and gun club is on RT 19 not 18, I dont wanna confuse anyone.

As for the club, theres a little hic-cup on that. I talked to my guy and found out that the club would be more then happy to accomadate our build, but due to laws, sue happys pricks and what not, they are weary of letting this many non-members shoot at the club...making matters worse sence we are building these guns and possably shooting them for the first time, they think there might be a chance of something going wrong and someone getting hurt on the range...so as of right now I dont think they want use shooting on the range. I have to talk to the president tomarrow and get a solid answer to that.

as for dates we have to figure it out fast, sundays are a no go for sure because of two trap leagues moving though and on a few saturdays we have another road league that hosts a shoot at our place. the weekend of feb 23-25 is no good for me. and judging by the response from up top Im thinkin sometime mid feb?
Im thinking FEB 17th? or maybe march 17th

I need everyones input so i can figure this out. either tomarrow or the day after i'll have the sheet with all the planned events for the two months so i'll have a better understanding of a date.

ALSO!!!! I found out that it is $100 to reserve the club....but if you clean it and leave it as found you'll get $50 back. I was in the understanding that i'd get all of it back, but the end cost to rent the place will be $50, and i'd ask that before everyone leaves to help clean up.

I could make either Feb. 17th or March 17th work for me. I can understand the liability thing with the range.

I have a kit, just ordered my compliance parts....

I need a reciever and will send a PMO or check for same, please advise.

I'm having  problems with the drillpress but will post the outcome before the build .

We will need silver solder an I am willing to drive if someone  in the utica/rome /syracuse area wants to navigate.

Adirondack,

I will definately stop by HF this week or next to pick up a drill press to use so even if we only have 1, we'll still have 1 to use.

Raysheen,

Are you going to organize a group buy for the receivers also?

OK guys, we are set on the date.

the date is going to be FEB 17th!
we have the club the whole day so i dont know what time you guys wanna start.
I have to give them the $100 deposit sometime before that date, and like i said before, if we clean it before it we leave we will get $50 back.

Great! as of this second, we have 5 people on the confirmed list. $10 is a good deal if you ask me hopefully we can get some more people though and it will be even less! :)

So what is going to be the format of the build on game day? Is there anyone who knows how to build one that is going to sorta walk us through it or is it going to be a first time for everyone?

I am by far NOT an expert...but have built many. I will be coming(as soon as my feb. schedule comes out I will confirm) I have learned alot of small "tricks" along the way that make for an easier and cleaner build. Romy's are pretty straight forward,Yugo's are almost as simple.it is the de-milling that will take some time. so everyone should plan on this.if you rush these they come out like crap!

Did Harbor Freight use to have a shop press on sale for like $60 or something?

I just sent a PM to the guy that was selling the U-drive builder kits and we'll see if he has any left, if not hopefully he'll give us the measurements and qty. of each u-drive we need.

That way we can just order the qty. of each X however many kits we're building.

I just got my comliance parts from COPES (that was FAST) and I'll be doing the gas cylinder change-over tomorrow.

I suggest all of us do as much or the de-mill work as possible on our individual kits BEFORE the build.

If you buy the compliance parts kits with the US made brake, send the brake to me and I'll see if I can use a friend's TIG welder to run a bead on the underside so that  mounting a bayonet isn't possible.

That way we won't run afoul of that law, plus if you move to a FREE state all you'll need to do is  replace the brake with a new one, leaving the bayonet lug  to be used.

Only thing I see we'll need now was the silver solder, and some headspace guages.

I'm really impressed with COPES shipping! didn't take but a few days!

I suggest you pick up some german night sites, I bought a set, and they're the cat's ass.

Also, if somebody wants to buy Bulgy 40 rounders, let me know, I'll have you order 5 for me...Just didn't have the money when I ordered...I've worked a total of 2 DAYS all month.

I'm gonna go to Harbor Freight today to see how much the drill press, angle grinder, and shop press cost. Homier has a press for like $60 or so +30 shipping. Do we know yet if we are doing a rivet or u-drive build?

i have a small(I think 8") drill press that I could bring and let you guys fight over who gets to keep it after the build party...YES that's a FREE drill press(I bought it and used it once.) if I can't make it to the build party and someone wants to drive here to get it let me know.I am in niagara county, about 40 minutes from Rochester.

I'd be happy tp pick it up from you if you can't make it out! I've been meaning to get one for some time now just for just this type of thing ...though you've got to let me give you something for it...anything you are looking for?? Though if you do make it then I'll happily fight over it with everyone else like you said!

I just got back from HF myself...think I might pick up a couple of 36" bolt cutters...they are on sale for about $12...plus I have a coupon that I can use...will be about $10 after the coupon...that way I can still do my rivet build if everyone else decides to go with U Drives since that's something I'm interested in trying. I'll be making them up before the party.

a rivet build is definately something I'm interested in also, just to gain the experience for future builds.

Do you know when your going to place the order for the AK kits?

I just got confirmation that the U-Drive kits are available, now we need to know how many will want  to do the u-drive method.

I believe price will be depandant on how many want to do this method.

my question is:

If doing the rivet build how hard will it be to have the nice shaped/formed heads on the rivets? This might be very simple but I have never used rivets. Is there a jig that needs to be purchased to do the rivets?

Rivet build is the way to go,I have done a Udrive...but was not satisfied with the out come. rivet builds are easy if you have the right tools...I have built AK's(re-installing the barrels) using the hammer the barrel method, threaded rod method and the most successful...the press. If someone is bringing a press to the build, rivet building is the way to go. I have 24" bolt cutter/rivet crushers that I will bring also. getting the barrel out is always a challenge, from the barrel pin to actually pushing the barrel from the trunnion.I use a pully puller for this...it works for me.last year when my son was 8 years old I helped him build his first AK.we bent the flat, spotwelded the rails, heat treated, and riveted the kit together...he did most of the work himself(except the physically demanding stuff) he even set his own rivets. It is not a pretty build...but it functions just fine for him. we stamped his initials into the reciever along with the caliber, now he has something to pass down to his kids(unless the gummint gets it first)
so the moral to this story is...AK's: so easy to build an 8 year old can do it!

gunwolf,

the barrel can be remove by pressing out the barrel pin first and then pressing out the barrel itself with the press correct?

Correct!  a press makes for a somewhat easy build...some pins are stubborn and have been known to break the punch(push pin) Kroil is a builders friend. after barrel removal, maybe storing the barrel outside while getting the reciever and trunnion ready to accept it will aid in the ease of re-installing the barrel. I usually throw mine in the freezer for a while, then slightly heat the trunnion and it goes right in. as far as not deforming the rivit heads on a build,a thin piece of cardboard or thick paper between the rivit head and the crushers works great.

here's some picks of my last build(YUGO M70b1)*note the frost on the barrel from freezing it for the install* and the Romy that my son built...

If we decide on the u-drive this is what I recieved from Miguel about  his kits:

price break can start at 5 kits.

I can print a set of instrucions for you to use and share with your group.

every kit that doesn't need a kit I can take $1.50 off

If your changing out the gas piston then you goin to need gas piston rivet that I have.
also eclips dont worry I will throw 2 in with every set that you order. Center support I also have are aviable for $2.50 each or 5 or more $2.

I can make you a couple of plates with a divot for the udrive head to press the udrive in instead hitting it with a hammer, I did this after dinging up 2 of my recievers. if you good with a hammer and not like me then you wont need it. If you have more questions you can give me a call at 305-338-xxxx. Thanks Miguel

I am not trying to talk anybody out of a U-drive build...many members have had great success with the U-drive method...just not me.If you are thinking about a U-drive build, please read back through all the postings in the build it yourself forum. You may catch some tips or tricks that I may have overlooked. I just feel that by riveting you are putting the AK back in it's original configuration.

What type of work stations are going to be available for use at the gun club on the day of the build? Are there benches, tables, etc?
Link Posted: 1/21/2007 6:45:42 PM EDT
[#34]
it would be good to get a lay of the land beforehand.

We should set up stations , I'll bring a bench grinder since my drillpress seems to be ka-put.

Grinders/Dremels

Small press for pressing out barrel riviets???

Drill Press for gas piston removal?

                                        Barrel Press?

Rivet tool?

Torch for silver solder operation on brakes/muzzledevices

Headspace/troubleshooting/final assembly

                                         Testfire

Probably Ideal would be picnic tables and set the stations opposite each other on 2 rows of benches with c clamps where needed?

I might still have a small handpress around I'll look.
Link Posted: 1/21/2007 6:53:42 PM EDT
[#35]
I'm definately bringing an angle grinder and a drill press (both from HF).

If we think it's needed I can also bring a roll of white paper about 3ft wide by very long to cover work surfaces to make cleanup easy.

If we are all going to chip in and purchase a HF shop press we are probably going to want to buy this and assemble it before the build day.

What size drill bits are going to be needed for drilling?

raysheen- are you ordering both the kits and the receivers, or just the kits?  Have you totalled how much we owe you?

Feb. 17th looks good! I only hope the weather holds out, or I won't make it in my small car.

I'm in for a rivet build as well.  The u-drive build looks simple to do, but I'd rather keep it authentic and sweat a little extra.  If necessary I can buy the Red Star Arms rivet tool and then sell it in the EE after the build is complete.  Let me know if I should do that.

I forgot to mention, I have some spring clamps and a couple of c-clamps I can bring too.

I was looking around online and saw that you can use a gear puller to remove the bbl. Does anyone know what size gear puller you would need to do this? I might be able to pick one of those up so we could use that to remove the barrel and the use the shop press for the rivets/pin removal.

I have one that I will bring...but bring a pocket full of change, penny's and nickels work great in protecting the barrel during this method. is anyone bringing a good vice? is there a total tool list of what's coming yet?

that would do it...fairly good price too...especially with the coupon...not that HF vices are very high quality...but it is harbor freight after all...not the best vice in the world, but it's not bad for the money if you ask me!

I'll be placing the order for the kits this week and I'll send a message to everyone who asked me to pick on up with info on how to pay. I'm just going to buy them and if you guys could get payment out this week after I send you info then that would be great.

Next up: receivers...I'm going to use an NDS-3 from Nodak Spud...thogh I think I'll mod it to use a double hook trigger since it's made to use the Century trigger group...which might not be that bad if you are planning on buying the compliance parts that are made by century....
Is everyone else planning on Nodak receivers? If so then if you transfer through Jackson's Guns & Ammo in Henrietta then we may be able to get a deal...not sure how much and it will all depend on how many we order...it may just be easier to go through local FFLs if we are all located all over the place.
Let me know what you would like.

Raysheen,

Is it okay if I just pay you in cash and pick it up from you when they come in?

What is the original trigger setup for Romy G's ? Single or Double hook? I would like to keep this rifle as original as possible. I'm up for ordering the receivers together.

Should we get the compliance parts on our own?

Also are we all going to chip in and purchase a shop press?

Also are we going to need an AK mag to test fit the magwell?

im a little confused as to where the parts, kits and other stuff is going to come from. is there any way we can make one person in charge of getting the kits/ compliance parts, and what ever parts we need all at the same time?

I'd like to beable to just tell one person "ok, heres my XXX amount of dollars to pay for all my stuff needed", then show up at the build and go at it.

I feel that im going to miss something and show up at the build with out a reciver or something like that.lol

please let me know as its kinda all over the place about where we are getting the stuff from and what not.

thanks!!!!!

If Raysheen is willing to/has enough time to do it all that would be great, plus we'd save some $ on shipping. Right now I need the receiver, parts kits, comp. part kits.  Hopefully Raysheen will chime in and let us know if he's able to order the compliance parts along with the parts kits.

We also have to decide where we are going to get the rivet kits from.

I don't want to lay the work of ordering the necessary parts on one person.  That said, it might be easier to order our receivers separately, especially from a logistics standpoint.  SWATsnip3r and I can order our receivers separate.

Are all the surplus AK magazines on Copes' website prebans?  If so, I'm gonna order a motherload of those, too.  Anyone want to go in on a group buy of 7.62x39 from AIM?

I emailed Copes last night and asked them if they would ship the 40rd. Bulgarians and the 30rd. Romanian mags to NY and was told Yes, so I would assume that those were preban.

I think ordering the Receivers seperate would probably be the easiest and most convenient way to go.
