Crime statistics just released by the FBI Monday show that even though crime
was down for the nation in 2008, it was a different picture in Rhode Island.

Nationally, violent crime declined by nearly two percent in 2008.
However, in Rhode Island it increased by 9 percent. Forcible rape was up by 8.2 percent,
property crime up 7.6 percent and aggravated assault up 4.2 percent.

Robbery and homicide rates were also significantly higher. The FBI reports murder and manslaughter
were up 52 percent; which includes 29 cases in 2008, 10 more than reported in 2007.
Robbery rates for the state were up 17 percent.

In fact, motor vehicle thefts is the only major category with a drop in crime rates for Rhode Island.

Yeah but when you go from 19 to 29... it ain't like the world is falling apart.

Hartford, CT alone for example was 45 for 2008.

It's a large percentage because it's such a small number.

It might be a small number but it was still a big increase.

One thing that I found interesting from the stats was that there was quite a bit of crime (at least more than I would have thought) happening outside of Providence in some of the smaller towns. There was even a killing in Smithfield of all places!
