I'm a NC legal resident (stationed in this area) and I plan on attending the Chantilly show next weekend...is it legal for me to purchase a shotgun there?

I've been told that if 2 states touch, then it's legal (I've bought rifles from both SC and TN gun-dealers with no problems),...but I've been told that NoVA dealers are kinda goofy on some gun laws. and that they won't sell you sh!t unless you're a VA resident.  I know that I can't buy Handguns...but I wondered if buying a shotgun would be allowed?  Anyone know for sure?

if its a long gun yes you can buy from VA just make sure you have at least 2 forms of id and even your station orders if your military.

Only legal if its from a dealer.  You can not legally do a face to face transaction with an individual without going through a dealer.

Ah, yes.  I assumed by the tone of the post he knew that part.  Doh!

You could also have a dealer there do the transfer if you want to buy from a private individual, correct?  You just have to utilize the services of an FFL somehow since it's an interstate and Federal matter.

I wouldn't mention the military thing. If this poster lives in MD (or is stationed in MD) it will only complicate things further. If he's an NC resident for real then he should just deal as an NC resident.

I don't think so.  IIRC it would have to be transferred to a FFL in NC and then to one in VA in order for him to take posession of it.  But that might only be a handgun thing.  And the prices on used guns from a table are not that much worse than from a person plus the transfer.  If you are looking for used shotguns though take a look at Blue Ridge Arsenal.  They have a bunch on the rack--might not be what you want though.  And they are basically across the street from where the show is going to be.

I just intended to find a dealer (FFL) at the show and pick up a NEW Mossberg 500 shotgun (no used guns and no private party deals).  I was told that a shotgun doesn't pose the same out-of-state ATF/Registration issues that Handguns do.  I simply wanted to confirm that information prior to driving over to the show and wasting my time trying to find a good deal, only to be told that it was illegal/impossible by a dealer there.

And yes, I am a legal NC resident.

Guess I'll just have to roll the dice and find out for myself.

Ok...I just called "Shooter's Paradise" down in Woodbridge.  I was told specifically that I can definitely purchase a Shotgun in VA as a NC resident.  He stated that the only time state of residence matters is when purchasing Handguns or other controlled firearms.

Sweet!!  Chantilly Gunshow, here I come!!

Sorry, but I got absolutely zero from that post....except the typical locker room lawyer/experts saying "yes, you can" and 50% of them saying "no you can't".
However posted on the C&E Gunshow Website is yet another confirmation of what Shooter's Paradise stated.  Scroll half way down the page on this link:

Or For those too lazy to click, here is the quote:

Requirements to Purchase Firearms from Federally Licensed Dealers

VA Residents: Must be of legal age to purchase a firearm.  Must have two (2) forms of ID with the same exact address.  One ID should be a valid VA Driver's License or VA ID Card.  The other ID can be a document that proves you are VA resident...a concealed carry permit, a personal check , a vehicle registration, utility bill...you can also use a hunting/fishing license...which ever form of ID you use for your 2nd ID it must have the same exact address as your driver's license.  You must fill out the paperwork and pass the background check, you can then take your firearm with you.

NON-VA Residents : Must be of legal age to purchase a firearm.  Can only purchase long guns (rifles and shotguns) and must have the same forms of ID as VA residents.  Driver's License from your State of residence and another ID that proves  you live in that State.  ALL LAWS OF BOTH STATES MUST BE COMPLIED WITH.  You must fill out the paperwork and pass the background check, you can then take your firearm with you.

Military Personnel: Must bring a copy of your orders that show VA as your "permanent duty station."  Must have your Military ID and your Driver's License from the State you are from.

NOTE:  This is all based on purchasing from an FFL at the show (which I intend to do).  I do not intend to buy from Joe-bob Smith out of the back of his trunk in the parking lot.
