i was thinking about doing a group ammo buy from aimsurplus.  i havnt contacted aim yet for any quantity discounts yet as i have no idea how many people are interested.  i live in the barrington area and am constantly in the north shore.  so i could meet people somewhere or pickup at my house

i am looking to pick up about 5-6k myself and im considering driving down to get it,  since shipping is such a big part of buying ammo.

ive got a suburban so i can carry a bit of weight.

if whoever is interested could post what and how much theyd like, ill complile all the info and see what aim would do for us as far as discounts if any.

here is a link to thier ammunition pagewww.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/Ammunition.html

I guess it depends on the ammo and the price. If they had something I wanted I'd be good for 2K of 5.56.

I would probably be interested to the tune of probably 1-2K rounds of various stuff total.

Calibers yet undecided but something along the lines of:
7.62x54R (likely)
.40 S&W (likely)
.45ACP (likely)
.308
.223
8mm

for those of you unsure, just post what you are interested in.  assume that you will pay their full retail.

we are saving the shipping cost on some heavy ammo.  the cost to ship a 980 round can of 308 from aim to barrington is $17.00.  i was thinking of buying about 5-6k so thats almost the cost of driving down there, minus my time.  so if the order is large enough the savings would be well worth the drive.

im not looking to make any money, just want to break even with gas costs and get a good deal on some ammo.

my gas cost are figured to be $105.30 to drive there and back,  haha thats just a little over a full tank.  the cost to ship 6k of 308 is $102.00 so its at a lost right now.  this has some potential.

Whether you want it or not, I'm going to insist that I kick in at least a little for gas.  Even if I just gave you enough for 5 or 6 gallons, it'll help you out and still be less than I'd pay for shipping.

much appreciated.

like i said before, pricing hasnt been worked out with AIM.  it all depends on what kind of discount if any.  once that becomes established i was figuring if enough people join we could all respectivly split the gas cost we would still be ahead

hopefully more people become interested.  im planning on calling AIM on monday and see what they can offer.  those that show some interest please post what and how much you would like.  this is not anything official, i just want some numbers to help negotiate with AIM

im going to call AIM around 1pm today.  it doesnt look so good with the numbers we have now to justify driving down there, thats if we get no discount or a small one.  gas will run about $125-175 depending on gas cost when i go(im being very generous here, as i have no idea what 1000lbs of ammo will do to my gas mileage on the highway.  we are saving about $400ish on shipping, so a net savings of about $225

now if we add in the factor of everyones time and gas to hookup and distribute the ammo, $225 seems not quite worth the time.  i myself would rather sit at home and wait for the ups truck.  escpecially those interested in 1k-2k, which is everyone except me. oh...and nate

however, if we get a decent discount of lets say 10%, im sure numbers would change, but anyways, i will post after i talk to them.

we can save a lot if we get a nice discount, so lets just hope for the best.
Link Posted: 12/12/2005 5:09:28 AM EDT
[#24]
Well, if we don't have a large enough quantity to get them to give us a discount, ask them what it would take.  I could increase my order some.  Also, we have a little bit of time until you place the order.
Link Posted: 12/12/2005 11:19:46 AM EDT
[#25]
alright, so i called AIM just now.  as far as discounts...haha...how about 5bucks per case of 308.  i guess this is still a small order for them.  same with the 223, they took off about 4bucks.  either that or the margins are quite low, which may be the case.  but who really knows.

they didnt give me a price on the rest of the stuff, just cause the bulk of order was those two.

he suggested that i email him the complete list and they will work out the pricing for us.  ill give that a shot but im definetly not expecting anything spectacular.  escpecially sine we are only adding a few more things.

we will have to pay sales tax of 6.5% if we pickup, no matter what.  if we pay cash or whatever

its probably a bad time to do this ammo buy, just cause of the holidays.  maybe just before spring people will have more ammo funds then and we can make a much larger order then.

so i guess we will call this deal busted for now.  sorry fellas, well try getting an order in the spring and see what that brings us.
Link Posted: 12/12/2005 11:25:25 AM EDT
[#26]
Agreed.  After the holidays would be good.  Then I could be in for more than what I tentatively put myself down for.  If we all continue to spread the word then by springtime maybe we'll be up at a higher volume where better discounts might be had?

thanks everyone for their interest.  i emailed AIM and they are cranking away at these numbers right now as we speak.  bryan at aim seemed really cool.

do the majority of people agree that before spring would be a better time?  say march-april?  im wiling to wait as i got a bit stocked up anyways.

i will post the exect figures aim sends me when i get them, just so people can guage for the future

ok i received pricing from AIM today, seems like they are doing a decent deal.

adcom 223 - list $165.00 per 1k, we can get it at $160.00 save $5.00 per 1k
SA 308 - list $147.00 per 980, we can get it for $140.00 save $7.00 per case
7.62x54 czech - list $59.95 per 800, we can get it for $55.00 save $4.95 per case
30.06 - list $34.95 per 192, we can get it for $31.95 save $3.00 per case
45acp fiocchi - list $8.95 per 50, we can get it for $8.50 save $0.45 per box
40sw fiocchi - list $10.95 per 50, we can get it for $9.90 save $1.05 per box

the slight discount isnt what we hoped for, but it is much appreciated.  the nice thing i found out about ordering in such high quantites is that shipping goes way down per lb.  about half of what it would be to order a few cases at once.  with the current order  the savings on shipping are not worth it to pick up.
so if people are still interested to save some money on ammo let me know.

shipping prices to zip 60010
adcom 223 - $5.76 per 1k round case
SA 308 - $11.88 per 980 round can
762x54 - $10.80 per 800 round can
30.06 - $3.06 per 192 round can
45acp fiocchi - $0.45 per 50 round box
40sw fiocchi - $0.36 per 50 round box

please do not quote me on these prices, as they are for reference only
this is only to guage weather we can get a larger order next year march-april

if you are interested please IM me what you are thinking about ordering.  well get a quanity built up for march and take things from there.

Question, why are you going to pay tax on the ammo?
Is it because you are picking it up at there location?
Can’t you have it billed to you here and tell them that you will have a freight service do the pick -up?  (You can be the freight service, right?)

Just wondering... man I need more coffee!

thats a good question.  when i was talking to them on the phone i was told if i pick it up there will be sales tax.  if this order goes through ill phone it in and see if your idea works, i dont see why it wouldnt, it makes sense.
