Man shot dead by Binghamton police
Police identify man as Peter Sablich, 56

A Bingamton man was fatally shot by police early this morning after he attacked officers with a knife, cutting one of them, according to a report by the Binghamton police.

Peter Sablich, 56, was shot after he lunged toward an officer near his apartment at 10 Crandall St., according to the news release.

The shooting followed a chain events, police said.

Police were called to Sablich's apartment at 12:51 a.m. after a fire was reported on his porch.

He was brandishing a knife and would not drop it, police said. Police sprayed him with pepper spray.

Sablich left his apartment and would not drop the knife. A police supervisor fired a "bean bag shotgun" at him and hit him in the arm and chest, according to the news release.

Sablich lunged at an officer and officers fired eight to nine rounds from their firearms, killing him, police said. The cut officer was treated and released for a wound to the hand.
