Hey guys,

I'm planning a trip to Flathead lake next year. I'm renting a house for a week. I was told that June is the best time to go so we can fish and swim in the lake. If you have any tips, tricks it suggestions I would greatly appreciate it!

June will be pretty good for fishing but for swimming, your nipples will fall off.

It is still fed by snowmelt in June.

June is a great time for fishing, the water is still really cold and the fish are really firm and full bodied.  Swimming, no fucking way!

About 10 years ago, I had 21 inches of snow fall at my house on June 21st, yup the first day of summer.

You run the risk that Going to the Sun will not yet be open and back country campsites will still be closed.

Now don't get me wrong, June is beautiful in the Flathead, lots of baby wildlife around, the leaves are coming on, the grass is greening up and the evenings are beautiful, but the water is still quite cold and the rivers are normally still running high, which makes for good white water rafting.

Did I mention the water is really cold!

Years ago I went swimming in Flathead lake on the 3rd week of August. The water temperature was 54 deg.

Here you can monitor lake temp and weather data by the hour.

There are a ton of lakes in close proximity; fish the Flathead, and swim elsewhere.

The first half of June can still be unsettled and wet. The latter part of June into the rest of the summer would be best for warmer & drier conditions, as well for swimming. The shallower bays and the south end of the lake on the Polson end (shallower than the mid/northern part) warm up quicker than the main lake which is always chilly even in the heat of summer.
