Well, I guess we really are Mississippians now. We bought a home.

It is on a few acres in Madison (in the city limits). It has a stream on it and many of the houses in the neighborhood have ponds. They range in size from a quarter acre to a few acres. I want to build a pond around half an acre in size.

Anyone know anything about this or anyone who does it?

Congrats on the new place!

Wish I could help with pond info but I would help you make a mess of your yard

When discussing ponds in Mississippi, eventually someone will tell you that the "soil conservation agency" or some other govt entity will do it for free. There are some programs, but they are pretty much restricted to agriculture or other non-recreational use.

I'd make sure that there aren't any covenants or other regs that could cause a problem then start looking for people who do dozer work or earthmoving. If they  don't do ponds, then they'll know someone who does. My pond is going on 20yrs old and needs some major TLC, but the cost is $$$$$ so it will have to wait a while.

It does seem there are programs to get it done for free....but these programs are so underfunded that it reality, it it unlikely to happen.
