I wish the chance for repeal was possible but I don't believe it is. Look at the NYS Legislature there are 150 seats, 99 of those seats are held by democrats. The Republicans hold 49 seats with one Independent and one seat vacant. Even if by some miracle a repeal bill was passed does anyone believe that Cuomo would sign it. Only the courts can reverse this mess, and lets hope they do.

If the gun-hating dems in the legislature embraced defeatism as often as the pro-2A side, we'd still be enjoying pre-94 gun laws here. The majority of the provisions in unSAFE can be traced back to older bills that had no shot and failed every year. In the long run, all that garbage prevailed because of perseverance. Be like the democrats - think long term and keep up the pressure.

There's not even a slight possibility that a repeal would even get out of committee in the Assembly, even if Cuomo were inclined to sign it (he isn't) and there would be enough votes to override a veto (there wouldn't). Proposals to roll back some SAFE provisions (I saw one that would take us back to the 2000 AWB)* have a slightly greater chance. By slightly greater I mean greater than zero, which is the chance that this proposal has. We're stuck with SAFE unless and until a court overturns part or all of it. *Is any AWB acceptable? Of course not. |

This is why I still see Nozzolio's legislation as a positive, even if it won't succeed. Every petition, proposed bill, demonstration, media story and legislator speaking out serves as another public reminder of opposition and thorn in the side of those who supported unSAFE. |
