What is so special about this 5.56? The specs look identical to AE223. Did I misread something?

The brass on XM193 is from US military ammunition that failed inspection or quality tests. Or is contract overrun material.

See www.thegunzone.com/556xm.html
The brass on AE223 is inferior to that of XM193. The thinner, softer case head results in primer pocket failures, sometimes on the first firing.

Fed AE has been using LC brass for some time now because of the problem you just mentioned. I called them about it approximately one year ago and they said that until they can get into production of their own "improved" brass, they were going to use Lake City. The last 10,000 rounds of Fed AE I have purchased, were Lake City brass with the NATO (+ sign inside of circle) headstamp.
BTW: Fed AE chrono's out to be consistency 50 fps+- slower than Mil. XM193. IMHO, you CANNOT beat (current production) Fed AE for for quality, consistency and accuracy for anywhere near the money.
