My wife has agreed to give me $250 towards a new pistol for my b-day in October. The additional money will likely come from selling my little used Ruger MKIII. It will be used on the range, occasional carry, and possibly for some IPSC matches. There are two that I'm looking at, both are approx $450-$500.

The two that I'm looking at are a Charles Daly Hi-Power in 9mm, and am Armscor 1911A1 in double stack 9mm. I'm not sure who makes the Charles Daly models these days, but I do know that Armscor is the same company that makes Rock Island Armory 1911s.

What's everyone's opinion on which to get?

For that money you should be able to go with the FN hi-power, exact pistol as the Browning for a lot less money. The Charles Daly and Armscor are pretty good but there are better guns out there for the same or just a little more cash. You just need to shop around. I'd hook ya up if I still worked at the store.

Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm. Can't say enough good things about it!

LOL

I love mine. Sold my G17 and bought one abut 6 weeks ago.

Stick w/ your M&P and buy more gear to shoot IPSC (if you need more gear?), a good carry holster and ammo w/ the $250 from the Treasurer of the Household. Keep the MKIII for informal practice. Best of both worlds!

I would pass on both of the pistols that you mentioned. In resell (when you want to upgrade in a year or so) you will lose your butt on either one of these in trading in to a dealer or even trying to sell to an individual.

Just my .02

Those two would not be my choice either. Try to find a FN or Browning hi-power at a good price.

I've been looking at the FN hi-Powers and a CZ75 also. I'm starting to lean more towards a FN Hi-Power or CZ 75.

Neither of those would be my choice. They are really poor quality and not something that I would carry and bet my life on.

Get a Glock or a M&P either would be in your price range.

I like my CZ P01. I have 16rd mags for it as well.

+1 on FN Hi Power.

Look for the marking, "Fabrique Nationale Herstal Belgique"

Don't get fooled by the FM Hi Power from Argentina, although they are cheap.

My first choice would be Glock. But if your looking into a 1911... I'm probably gonna get flamed for this, but I love my Taurus PT1911. Great features, great fit, 100% reliable so far. Hard to beat for the money(as far as 1911s go).
