.....Since Ohioans now have the option to get CCW permit....does this mean we can no longer "open carry"?

Open carry is still fine. Some folks might freak out, depending on where you live. Nobody around here cares too much, unless I was to head into Toledo. Personally, I don't like the attention. I carry openly around my own property, most times. I carry openly while visting neighbors. It just depends.

You can also CCW on your own land. Even if your own land is a suburban backyard.

Yup! In my case, it's a couple of acres. I carried concealed from time to time on my own property prior to obtaining my CCW. Around here, it's just easier for me to carry openly, though. Around friends, and family, it's just easier. Actually, it's not even intentional. I just don't worry about concealment. If I'm going into town, I make sure everything's well hidden - mostly because I don't want a bunch of undue attention...legal or not.

We had an incident on our street several months back. I was firing up the grill when I noticed a PD bird overing overhead. Not knowing exactly what was going on, I strapped my P226 on as a precaution. I kept it out in the open as a visual deterrent.

Turns out the PD was pursuing some drug dealers running through and hiding in some neighborhood yards. I was walking the street and conversing with neighbors and both Cincinnati and Norwood PD and nobody gave the gun a second glance...well some of the neighbors did but I like to keep them on their toes.

...so as I understand it.....if you can LEGALLY own your firearm, you can legally carry it? ....That's great....I had a Sherriff ask why I would want it in the open, and I replied that a perp would be looking for an easy target, and that a visible firearm would be a deterrent. I do a lot of work in the ghettos of Cleveland and have heard gunshots on more that one occasion while on the job. And I , just like anyone else, would like to return home to my family every night. Thanks for the input everyone!!! SEMPER FI!!!

Well...

...check and make sure Cleveland is ok with it. As far as Ohio law goes, you're in the clear. Cleveland may see it differently.

As to the deterrent school of thought, there's another school as well: That if the SHTF, you'll be the first one targeted since you're the guy with the gun. To be honest, I'm not sure which school of thought I subscribe to. I would just as soon obtain a CCW if you haven't already, and not alarm anyone. If you open carry in Cleveland, you WILL freak people out. Personally, I don't want the attention. YMMV.

exacty! while open carry might work with state law, its not ok as far as all local ordinances. You have to check to make shure that watever town/village/city your in doesnt have a law prohibiting open carry. I do believe that if the CCW reform bill passes that is no longer an issue.

If i remember correctly clevelnad won't let you have it loaded. I think you can carry open, but empty. A few cities had laws like that.

Also if you have your CCW you can no longer carry open.hinking.gif

Wrong. I was told that at my CHL classes, but they were wrong too.

Absolutely not. This legislation has never restricted or limited open carry, and based on the Ohio Supreme Court decision it is feasible that any effort to restrict open carry would be illegal.

Open Carry was specifically ruled an Ohio Constitutional right by SCOH back in '93 (or so) during the CHL debate when a case was filed in an attempt to have the existing "prudent man" CHL law declared unconstitutional -- and therefore no restriction at all for concealled carry.

Court refused to make that ruling because open carry is a fundamental right.

Fundamental constitutional right cannot be abrogated by local law or edict.

Let the folks who say the police will cite you for "inciting riot" or other nonsense produce the court cases and convictions.
