Man faces charges of conspiracy in wreck

HERALD/REVIEW

SIERRA VISTA - After two illegal immigrants were killed Saturday evening, a Mexican national is being held on federal human smuggling conspiracy charges, an Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman said Tuesday.

All occupants of a vehicle that crashed at 6:14 p.m. were illegal immigrants, and all were thrown from the pickup at mile post 48 on Highway 191.

A Willcox-area DPS patrol unit spotted the suspect vehicle and determined that the vehicle was stolen. DPS Sgt. Brian Preston said a traffic stop was not immediately initiated by that officer, but additional units were posted on the anticipated route of the stolen vehicle. The initial patrol unit could only see the truck's driver, but there were 14 occupants.

At 6:13 p.m., a traffic stop was attempted, but the vehicle failed to respond. The driver subsequently sped up the truck to flee from DPS.

"One officer deployed the stop sticks," Preston said. "Looks like the driver was trying to swerve around the stop sticks."

But he said the truck his the stick. The vehicle rolled several times.

One victim, determined to have been the driver, died at the scene. The second victim died at University Medical Center in Tucson after being flown there by helicopter, Preston said.

The names of those killed are being withheld pending notification of family by the Mexican Consulate.

Five victims were treated and released from the Copper Queen Hospital in Bisbee. Three victims were treated and released from UMC, and two remain in that hospital, Preston said.

One victim was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix and remained in treatment through Monday, Preston said.

One man was taken into custody by the U.S. Border Patrol Saturday evening after being identified as the director of the illegal border-crossing voyage. Federal charges are pending against the man, whose identity has not been released.

The DPS investigation suggests he also was navigating the vehicle and advising the driver to flee from authorities.

Preston said the saturated, muddy ground at the site of the wreck likely saved the lives of several of those involved in the crash by softening their landing.

I wonder how much the taxpayers have to dish out for this incident.

Hopefully the driver has insurance and everybody has health coverage.

Who pays the hospital bills in case they don't ?

Sure, lets treat the surviving occupants for free and then just let them go even though they are here illegally and should be sent back to their own country

Would anyone care to check with their nearest liberal as just why this is ok to do. Because I fail to see how it is.

this is the part that pisses me off

They better have been released into Custody if there illegal but I severly doubt that was the case ie released into custody.

Hopefully, there was a green truck out front when they were "treated and released"

Apparently fleeing from US Law Enforcement wasn't one of the topics covered in the "comic book".

I wonder if the auto insurance companies have some fine print so they don't have to cover medical fees if the vehicle is stolen.

You make funny.

The USBP doesn't stick around after the illegals are hospitalized, because then they would have to 'pay' the hospital bill.  These people would have just walked out the front door after the hospital released them.  And three guesses as to who gets stuck with the bill, and the first two don't count.

Baaaaaaah.

I thought we weren't to do medical treatment on illegals any longer?

I am really beginning to hate this.
