Um, did you buy Magpul followers?  Or did you buy some of the orange anti-tilt followers that are identical to the green anti-tilt followers?

I've just never seen Magpul followers colored orange, unless they were prototype ones.  And I'm a Magpul dealer.

You shouldn't have to replace the springs.  

You take out the old follower.  Pop off the spring.  Put the spring on the Magpul follower.  Magpul follower should go in the mag with little, if any, resistance.

So, you get that far, right?  But the problem is the top of the mag near the feedlips is a little to tight and the follower starts to get stuck there.  I'm guessing (based on experience), but does that sum up the problem?

I think you are correct.  

I have personal experience with the exact same problem.  I had a few mags that were just a tad too tight near the top.  The green followers worked fine though.  The Magpul followers were a bit too tight.  On a few of them I ended up putting the green followers back in them.  Those were the worst (read that as tightest).  The rest of the followers I either just hit lightly with a file or I'd use a ruler to push down on the follower and let it spring back up.  Using the "ruler trick" worked for most of them.

What kind of magazines are you using?  Did you try the mags before swapping followers?  

The mags that gave me problems were my most beat-to-hell USGI mags.  I'm sure they were stepped on at least a few times before I got them.
