Wife got sucked into a pothole and shredded a tire in her Subaru.

So we'll need to get two rims checked, buy a new tire, and get it shaved to match the others.

Suggestions, please.

I will second that. I have been dealing with them for about the last 30 years. The Nederland store is good people.

Thanks guys.

Well, I just called the store in Orange, and blew the guy's mind when I asked about getting a tire shaved to match.  He said that they don't do it, nor does he know of any place that does.

I have never heard of anyone doing that. What would be the purpose of shaving a tire down to match a used tire?

Me, i would just put the new one, and the best of the other three,on the front.

To my knowledge, it's important because of the Subaru's automatic AWD. The computer thinks one of the tires is slipping because it's turning at a different rate than the others.

If that's the case you should just buy two tires for the same axle. But I can't really see a worn tire being so different than a new tire that it would cause that problem. I would think even low air pressure in one tire would cause the same issue.

On all wheel drive vehicles they have clutches in the transfer case and with 4 mismatched tires the clutch is constantly applying and unapplying.

GM wants all 4 tires to be within 1" or less on each other in circumference. So many times you need to replace all 4 tires when a tire is beyond repair.

At one time a lot of tire shops did tire shaving to get the tires round. This was back in the fifties and sixties.  I bought an old tire shaver back in the 80's, we sold a lot of tires to guys racing showroom stock.  We would shave the tires down to 3/32 or less. The fast guys would have them shaved to 1/32.

Look for a tire shop that had been around since the 50's.

Tire rack had one that was shaved to where we'd need it. Should get here next week. Just glad that the wife's last day at work for awhile was today. I'll just get it mounted and balanced.

Next time, we'll buy 5 and rotate them frequently.
