The "English First" charter amendment is up for a vote tomorrow in Davidson Co. In short, it requires ALL non-emergency Govt. bidness to be conducted in ENGLISH. No paid translators at taxpayers expense, no dupe spanish signs at the welfare office, no spanish announcements over the PA system.

PLEASE VOTE "YES" TO SUPPORT ENGLISH!!!!!!

Going to do it tomorrow morning before I go to the base.

I actually had some twit call me and try to convince me to vote no. I told her at the beginning that I was voting for the measure, she then pulled some libtard crap out of the air on how it would cost MORE to pass the measure. Then she asked if she had changed my mind. I told her no and hung up.

It probably will. Passing laws costs money (compliance costs, etc.). Not passing them is free.

No they said that IIRC that it would cost a certain dollar amount to the city to quit using all of the multilingual stuff and that it would cause businesses to lose money.

I wanted to tell the twit that english is the language of business and aviation and that to be a success in life you need to speak english, but I was at work and wasting minutes on my cell phone at the time and I didn't think it would be worth it to argue with the libtard.

I just think it's a travesty that we even have to vote to have things done in English.

It's depressing.

Yes, but at least we GET the opportunity to vote on it! The esteemed Mayor Dean did his best to waylay this amendment & had the Metro legal staff declare it void due to it being 3 days over the limit from the last amendment vote. (There's a time minimum between amendment votes.)

So after Metro said it was 3 days too soon, it was placed on a special stand-alone ballot. The libtards then wrung their hands & moaned about how much $$$ this election was costing. Never mind they could've had it for free last Nov. 4..............

Heaven help us from ignorant assed libtards.............

I'm from Nicaragua and when I came to the USA in 1978 I didn't speak a lick of English. I didn't have a choice but to learn the English language, and I think it should be the same for everyone else as well. If they don't want to learn English go back to the country that they came from. I've been back to Nicaragua for the last 5 years and I know for a fact that if Americans try to get English the mandatory language there because they don't speak Spanish, they'll tell them to go screw themselves. The United States bends over backwards for to many people. Just my .02.

About 18 minutes until the polls close. All the indicators was this would be a tight contest. I hope the referendum passes.

61 of 173 precincts reporting, plus early votes:  12,359 for, 16,224 against

ETA:

early voting: 4,609 for, 8,725 against
absentee voting: 876 for, 408 against

total now 20,329 for, 25,537 against, with 109 of 173 precincts reporting

(and with 64 precincts left to go, they're almost to the number of votes that they were predicting as the total turnout for this vote)

What a joke.  I'm hoping the more rural portions of Davidson make that gap up.

I hear you. Even the "City Paper" - you know, the one that is supposed to be conservative was against this passing. For the undecided types there was hardly anywhere they could turn as far as the media and not be bombarded by "vote no" messages.

Earlier today, I heard that they were predicting a voter turnout of around 50,000, but the total was 73,896.

It should be no real surprise that it failed.  Nashville/Davidson Co. is too liberal.

It didn't help that the backer of English Only refused to release a list of donors before the election.

Yes, the result is a good indication of where we are heading. Major bummer that this didn't pass.

I better sign up for Spanish lessons now before the trainers start 'gouging' us on the price for lessons.

What bothers me the most is the lengths that many of our elected officials went to try and prevent us from voting on the issue.

I don't care what the issue is, if the people want to vote on it, we should vote!

ETA: Since I own page 2, I must state. My problems with this mayor started when a pedestrian bridge was planned and then people were laid off.

This iced his cake with me.

Which bridge was that? The Greenway bridge by Two Rivers or the big one downtown?

I mis-typed. Bill Purcell built the bike bridge in 2003.

Dare I asked why this bridge was a bad thing? I often use it myself in biking from Donelson to Shelby Park & back. Gotta work on the slowly raising body weight & all that.........
