Wave and I were chatting last night about potentially going upstate for a hunt. Is anyone here interested? Does anyone know a good place to go? Lets see what people thing, then maybe we can make this an annual event and rent a hunting lodge next time.
So post where you go, how much it costs and all the info you have! |
I will join you in a weekend or even a week hunt if you give me advance warning.
You are welcome to hunt on my land or we can go on public land if too many of us (more than 10). I have 100 acres and my neighbors additional 80 to hunt deer. This area is either handgun ,muzzleloader or shotgun. No RIFLES If you want a somewhat more remote hunt we can go to the Addirondacks and hunt with rifles. |
I'm in for anything.. but, been looking to try and do some varmint hunting as well. If anyone has ideas about that let me know.
I am in for trying to hunt. I am starting a new job tomorrow and do not have any vacation time yet, so I would have to play it by ear. Maybe show up for just a day trip if it is close enough.
This also means that I would have to buy a new hunting rifle...Any suggestions? Bill H. |

Monroe County....10 minutes from my house On W.Bloomefield Rd Mendon,NY |
Bird hunting is for sissies! |
does that mean im the only one up for bird hunting? Ill go for varmints also. Not up for deer or big game this season
I'm up for killing anything, so whatever you guys are ok with is fine by me.
Hoplite, if we do any pheasant, ducks or grouse, I have some bad news for you. You would be our pointer dog. I don't trust my Caesar around loons. Ed, that offer sounds perfect, especially since most of us have shotguns now. Now here's the question that'll hurt....how far is it from NYC? It would be cool if we made it a weekend, but for a day or whatnot, it'd be impossible (If I'm recalling how far you are up.) Maybe we can rough it and camp? That'd make it uber cool IMO. Anyway, any other ideas? |
I like this idea and Ed has put forth a hell of an offer. I say we rid Ed Avila's land of anything alive by then end of the weekend.
Seriously, it'd be quite fun, I'd think. By the way, I've been thinking of trying my hand at coyote hunting. You got any 'yotes out your way, Ed? |
I'm in for anything Big or small. And thanks to you guys i have completed my Hunter education Classes and have my License.
Back in June when i asked where to go for the Classes you guys provided a whole lot of info. I took the course at the VFW post in Levitown, all the instructors were great and i really learnt a lot. Ed's offer sounds like a good one, count me in. |
I've never been hunting and have been really bitten by the bug I wanna go for anything that has fur on it!!! A weekend trip sounds good to me. I think we have to take a hunters safety course to get a license though. Mmmm, I'll also need that Marlin 1895 SS in 45-70 I saw yesterday at gaylans,....Mmmm gonna need a shotgun also, my old sawed off aint gonna do the trick. Mmmmm some Camo outfits to look the part also....Mmmm one of them orange coats to keep me toasty.... I think I'm gonna have to tell the wife I'm workin and disappear for the weekend with you guys..

Got my NYS hunting license last year, and didn't do a damn thing with it. Oh wait, I've never hunted before that's why, sure I'm game. Where can you go that's rifle is ok?
Greg,I have made the trip to NYC in 6-7 hrs,but that is to the "gate" of the city. We are 3 hrs from Albany,so add that to whatever it took the crew to make it to B&J last year.Definately not worth for 1 day trips,a long weekend(take a day off) would be the minimum to enjoy the hunt.Say,leave Thurs after work (to avoid the crowds leaving NY on Fr) get here at night and hunt Fri,Sat,and Sun morning. On Sun by noon you are ready to go and get there at a decent hour. Camping there is not a good idea because you will literally be shitting where you hunt, and that is a big no-no with me. A motel in which 4 people can stay would cost about $15 a piece/day.At 3 days for a total of $45 each is, in my opinion, a great thing for the convenience of a hot shower, shit, shave and a good warm bed.Not to mention the PITA of bringing the camping equipment and having to set it up and take it down. You would also avoid disturbing the game we'll be hunting. We can cut down on your expenses by cooking and eating at my house.Once we build the compound, things will be easier since we will be right on the land and we can take in 4 hunters in the house and another 6-8 in the barn to be built. It will be cold in Nov for campers.I can almost guarantee it. |
We would have to go to the "northern zone" which includes Albany. The mountains is where we could go camping and rifle hunting. It would be closer to NYC,probably 3-4 hrs. Or if you don't want to go to the Addys(more mature deer, but less of them)we can go to the public lands I like a lot up by Watertown. |

WHO SAID they CLEANED "LOVE CANAL" - what is that??? www.douglaswebtech.com/shatto/minijack2.jpg btw, before I moved to NJ, I purchase a LIFETIME SPORTSMAN's license so I could join you happy arf.com'ers!!! |

Ed, I'm up for that kind of weekend. Let me know when is best to come on up. I have my hunting permit, all I need to do is get this years. I just sold yet another AR15 and I'll earmark a couple bucks for this kind of trip.
I only have a bird/clay shotgun, is there any chance of a loaner pistol/shotgun? Why isn't a rifle allowed? |
Ed, if I may, shotgun only counties were "identified" because of population densities and the real and honest fear of a rifle projectile going too far and endangering the indigent human population. Some counties like Westchester, RICH in deer populations in locales, are BOW hunting only for the very same reasons - shotgun projectiles can possibily travel too far.
The state decided that this zone along with several others do not have the agriculture and terrain features that are suitable for stopping high powered rifle bullets. Since a shotgun slug has a max range of 500-700m whereas a rifle bullet can travel up to 7 miles depending on the caliber (i believe a 7mm mag will go 7 miles) they feel a shotgun is much safer in case the hunter misses or the round goes through the animal |
You can't (well shouldn't) really loan someone a pistol. You have to have a NY pistol permit and any pistol in your possession is supposed to be listed on your permit. I have some pistols that belong to friend's listed on my permit so I can borrow them. I don't lose any sleep over letting shoot one of my pistols at a range or informally, but I don't think it would be a good idea to go hunting with a pistol that was not on your permit. If you ran into a DEC officer he's want to see your permit and would check to see if the pistol is listed on it. |
no, not me. The place I do my hunting is called "Supermarket"
Good one.- Tom, I love you man. |
So if we're hunting on private land do we still need a permit?
However, under those circumstances, its called illegal search and seizure, since its private land. |
on the drive home when the cop sees a deer on the roof and wonders where the tags are then its probable cause to pull you over |
I might be able to go if it was within a couple hour drive from Buffalo and I happened to have the day off.
Don't make plans based on me, but once the plans are made post them and I'll let you all know |
Thanks Lion,Hop and Aimless for answering questions
No handgun unless it is on your pistol permit.Rifles carry too far and you definitely need a license. DEC laws allow their officer to go on lands without warrants. Greg, the best day for hunting is opening day (First Mon after the 15th of Nov-Nov 17 this year?)Unfortunately I have to work.I will hunt the following weekend though! |
Yes, DEC has the broadest ranging powers! If they "smell" "reasonable cause to believe" you are toast - no such thing as illegal search with these "boys". For instance, if they see mud on side panels of car, SUV, etc. and you are in a known "hunting" area they can stop you to search for illegal game. Anything else they find, ie. drugs, illegal weapons, this is a GOOD search. You become CANidate for Kornholers reunion. |
So I have less than a month to take my hunters safety course, which I took 20 years ago and dont have the paperwork for and than get a license for whatever it is we will be hunting?
Ed you got any Cape Buffalo running around up there or what? LOL |
The DEC had the record of my taking a bowhunting course in 1982 on file so I didn't have to take it over.
Mag162 - If you bought a NY hunting license within the past 20 years they will probably have it in the computer - and you will be good to go. |
I hadn't even bought a bowhunting tag and they were able to find it.
I think i was 17 years old at the time it was a gun range/club that was on Hillside Ave. in Queens Village. It is no longer in existence now.
I called the DEC office near the place where I took the class and the DEC office had the certificate on file. I took the class at a public library or somewhere like that, I have no idea what gunclub was involved.
If you guys decide on something around Watertown, I would like to join in.
When the reporter asks about the record buck I just shot, the reply would be: " Why yes, I did sleep in a Holiday Inn last nite." |
Damn Ed, you are unleashing a bunch of unblooded city slickers in Mendon???
Oh, the poor innocent, unsuspecting little bambis...the bloodletting, the horror... Please remind the NYC crew to be very cautious around our wolves and bears... BTW, my bird dog will be biting you in the a$$ when next you visit |
Odd, which of these guys are NYC crew? I know most of them and I think they all live on Long Island!
everything south of Poughkeepsie = NYC to us
My dad referred to my sister who lived in New York City (not "The City" as that was Watertown) for years while she lived on Long Island. He said it in a tone of voice where you could have substituted "Sodom and Gomorrah," ha ha. |
You don't want to know what we call upstaters. |
Hey c'mon now. We've had a house in Saugerties for 20 yrs my parents live there full time now. And I proudly say I own 5 1/2 acres in Herkimer County southern Addy's I love it up there. Hopefully one day I will get to build a little hunting camp on the land!! So I consider myself a NY'er.
Let me be the first to offer my guide services to Balzac for a snipe hunt |
Give me a break, we have been snipe hunting on Lond Island for years! They like the sandy soil conditions. MIKE.
Northern snipe are a whole 'nother bag of canaries. Trust me.
Snipes? Canaries?
WTF? Are we back to bird hunting with Hoplite |
Rifles for snipes! Silly Woodchucks! Rifles are for deer! Down here we hunt snipes with nothing but a flashlite and a sack. Kind of like that sack that SP10 has those canaries in. MIKE.
