If I have a pistol from out of state and move to NJ is it legal to have the pistol if I have a NJ long gun permit (ID Card)? Or do I have to get a pistol permit?

Also, If I live in NJ and want to give my pistol to someone in NJ who has a long gun permit (ID Card) do they need a pistol permit for the transfer?

If your pistol was acquired legally before you moved to NJ, you do not need either a FOID (NJ Firearms Owners ID Card, which has no expiration date and has no bearing on handguns or handgun ammo at the present moment) or a NJ Pistol Permit (which btw is only valid for a period of 90 days)

In order for you to legally transfer your pistol to someone else:
1. You have to die, having willed it to them
or
2. They need to have applied for and received a Pistol Purchase Permit for you, the seller, to complete and distribute all 4 copies (1 to you the seller, 1 to the buyer, 1 to the State Police and 1 to the issuing Police Dept.)

As long as you purchased the pistol legally you can bring it into NJ. No pistol permit is necessary.

So, are you guys telling me that I dont even need an ID card to own a pistol ion NJ if I owned it prior to comming to NJ?

How do I prove that I got the pistol legally in another state (Ohio) when I got it 10+ years ago at a gun show with cash from a private sale?

I have another gun that a friend gave me while I was in Ohio too. In ohio guns are exchanged with cash at hand in huge gun shows like the one in Borea. There arn't any background checks or paper work with these transactions. The only time this happens in Ohio is if you buy from a dealer.

This shit is too much

Yes, that would be correct.
NJ law does not govern acts that occur outside the state's borders.
Your FOID has nothing to to with Handguns
Firearm registration is totally voluntary in NJ (and as Nancy Reagan said a while ago "just say NO")

A bill of sale would be a nice thing to have, but unless you get popped for something, it most likely will never be called into question.

Welcome to the only state in the union that does NOT have a guarantee in its state constitution for its subjects citizens to keep and bear arms. And the state where basically, ownership and possession (for any purpose) is illegal unless there is a specific exemption in the law.  Sorta sucks, doesn't it?

A slight derail... but, wait, on what your saying...

as an NJ citizen can I purchase a pistol from an out of state dealer and then take it home without getting a Pistol Permit??  Or is that federal law territory?

You cannot take possession of a pistol from out of state, unless you are a resident of that state.  You can always buy/pay for a pistol from any state, but the transfer to you must be done through a NJ dealer.  I just purchased a pistol from an internet dealer in NM.  I paid the NM dealer for it, and now he's shipping it to my local NJ FFL dealer.  I'll pay the local guy $40 for the transfer, but, in this case, I'm saving over $100 in NJ state tax so I'm making out ok...

But by law, you must pay 7% NJ Use Tax when you file your income tax.
