Lived most of my life in Illinois, escaped 6 years ago. Momma wants to come home. Will be living in the Bloomington Normal area. Have some questions. I am currently in AZ where we have almost total firearm freedom.
1. are my toys legal in Iiinois, with mr. FOID 1919a4 with crank m14 ak47 mak90 m1 garand ar180 ar15 high cap mags ruger p85 colt.45 misc hunting rifles and shot guns 2. I know that you have to have mr FOID, but do you have to register all weapons? 3. Other that Darnells, where near Normal are good places to shoot. 4. Do need mr FOID to purchase ammo? Thanks for the input and help |

Just east of Bloomington on I-74 is a town called Leroy. Outside of town maybe 10 minutes is the Leroy Pistol and Rifle Club. It is set up with two pistol and two rifle ranges. The farthest being 100 yards. They also have a skeet set up.
The ranges are all outside where Darnells does have the inside one. Also, Darnell has the 300 yard outside range. They have a canopy overhead that covers the shooting area. There is a gate that is locked and only members have the combination. You can go just about any time between dusk and dawn. Membership is $50.00 a year and you have to be a NRA member. It's a nice set up and only about a 30 minute drive from Bloomington. I'm sure you can find a more fancier range, but for the money and country setting, you can't beat it. Hope this helps. You definitely will miss the CC and hate how Chicago politicians run this state with all of their anti-gun propaganda. |
+1 and the 'm14' unless you are a classIII dealer, but Im not sure you meant select fire toys. |
Yeah, these guys are right. When I saw that, I saw "M1A" If it's an honest to god full auto M14, you can't have it here |
I have a custom built M1A made of all USGI M14 original parts except for the receiver. Is is a commercial semi receiver. I call it a M14 because 90% of the gun is a M14, but it reality I guess its a M1A. Sorry about the confussion.
I am not really looking forward to this move back. It pains me to lose most of my firearm freedoms. It is so nice out here in regards to firearms. No waiting periods, NFA ok, CC ok, open carry is a normal thing here. No FOID. And most importantly, a govt the still backs up these 2nd ammendment rights. Thanks again. will be posting again. |

Don't do it!
Can't you send the Misses back here on a vacation? If you have a stable good paying job down there, I really can't see why you'd want to move back here. Don't you know that it is most of us IL gun owners dream to move to AZ? I love to do it just for the weather and CCW. |
+1. Ever since I visited AZ Ive dreamt about moving there. We were in the Tuscan and Bisbee. areas. I saw ppl open carry and no one turned a head. *sniff sniff* Lets trade places! |
As much as I'd want to move out of state, I really love it here.
I go down to B-N a lot. It's a nice area. I can't help on the gun laws, other than you need Mr. FOID. |

CFE738, Hi, I live in Bloomington and the closest place to shoot that's worthwhile is Buffalo Rock Range. An hour drive north. I shoot handguns at Darnell's indoor range in the Winter when buffalo is closed. If you shoot IDPA, Darnell's has a match once a week. Hey, if you have any questions about the area, E-mail or IM me. We'll have to get together and head up to Buffalo range and do some blasting at the pit. |
I forgot about Leroy |
Haven't been to Buffalo yet, but the IL crew gathers once a month or so to have a "blastfest". Check the forum for more details for when we have the Blastfests!

Here is the deal. I can sell my house, pay all of my bills, cars, etc. Buy a nice house for cash. Have no bills. and put a lot of money into investments. I love AZ, but Momma wants to go home. UGGG.
I wen't to high school in Normal. UHS 85. And ALL of her fam lives there. I have thought of sending her there with the kids but that would get really expensive in legal fees. My job is good but not stable. I think that it is going to mexico in a few years. Oh well what are you going to do. |
Don't know, but I bet it'll be in the same legal category as pistol, which is legal, or if it is categorized as SBR(which ya can't have) but I don't know. |
AR pistols are ok, just like any other pistol. Have seen them here before.
Illinois sucks but at least its not Cali or a perma ban state. |
That's what I thought, that they'd be classified as pistol. +1 to the second part that Kalahnikid said. IL is great as a state, but not great on the gun law side of things. [tinfoil]Maybe if we can get rid of Blago, Hizzoner King Richie Daley the Second, and their minions, then IL would be a better place[/tinfoil.] |
There's no maybe about it. As long as you don't have any guns with happy switches, rifles with short barrels, or silencers, you're good to go. Just don't throw a pistol on your belt and go to the supermarket. WIZZO |
Full-auto selectors.
Ones that go Safe, Semi, Full. Full being the happy position. WIZZO |
Sweet! Now if they institute that, SBR's and CCW, we'll be all set! |
Sorry, just had to fix it for ya. |
Doesn't matter if I use the wrong term, we can't have them anyways
WIZZO |
Which sucks. We MUST get Blago and Hizzoner Daley the Second out. Must. Must. Must. Must. ETA-there's a good chance that'll happen. Blago is nearly dead and Daley is in scandal up to his eyeballs. |
Doesnt matter.....Nixon was just sure to win that '60 election. |

CFE738, give a shout to Jimmi , he lives in AZ. now, moved not to long ago.
Good guy and a hoot to shoot with. |
And when ya get settled in , in B/N , some of us go eat at Damons, keep us posted.
Woodbutcher, I'm very happy for your 800 posts!
Now get posting! |

Hey all. I was just in Normal this past weekend. Had my 20 year reunion. Yes I am old. Got blasted and had a good time. Partied at Gill street bar/pub. Was a good trip overall. Butttttttttt I did not get any warm fuzzy's about moving back. Noticed a lot of changes. Don't like all the new public housing that has showed up. Didn't like the fact that there were not a lot of gun stores. Hate the feeling that if you dont work for the FARM you dont have a real job. Was cold. Ugggggggg. Was 102 when I left Phoenix on Thursday. Friday morning was Flipping cold. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Its still a nice town and area, but I am have bad vibes about this move. It does not fell like home to me anymore. I did not feel comfortable there for some reason. Thanks for the replys so for. I will keep you all posted as to what happens.
If you think it was cold friday morning, you should have been up here thursday morning.
Yikes! I think it got down into the upper 30's. I froze my ass off on the way to class waiting for the truck to warm up enough to give me some heat. You're really gonna hate the winters again WIZZO |

Is it legal to carry a weapon in a holster on your person or on a tactical vest?
In public, NO! If you are at a private range that will allow you too than yes. There is no Concealed or Open carry in Illinois of any kind. All firearms must be completely enclosed in a case, and unloaded. Per Illinois State Police Website: How can I legally transport a firearm on my person or in my vehicle? There is more than one way to legally transport a firearm. However, in order to be in compliance with all statutes, it is recommended all firearms be transported: 1. Unloaded, 2. Enclosed in a case and, 3. By persons who have a valid FOID card. What constitutes a legal "case" for transporting a firearm? The Criminal Code refers to "a case, firearm carrying box, shipping box, or other container." However, the Wildlife Code is more specific, defining case as "a container specifically designed for the purpose of housing a gun or bow and arrow device which completely encloses such gun or bow and arrow device by being zipped, snapped, buckled, tied, or otherwise fastened with no portion of the gun or bow and arrow device exposed." How do I transport a firearm through an Illinois community with an ordinance that prohibits firearms or handguns? Illinois' Unlawful Use of Weapons law does not preempt local ordinances from banning firearms. Persons carrying or transporting firearms through such communities could be subject to local firearm ordinances. It is recommended that you contact local authorities regarding their firearm ordinances. If a non-resident is coming to Illinois to hunt and would like to bring their firearm, how do they legally transport it? Non- residents must be legally eligible to possess or acquire firearms and ammunition in their state of residence. It is recommended that, in order to be in compliance with all statutes, non-residents transport all firearms: 1. Unloaded, and 2. Enclosed in a case, and 3. Not immediately accessible or broken down in a nonfunctioning state. Is it legal to have ammunition in the case with the firearm? Yes, so long as the firearm is unloaded and properly enclosed in a case. |
