We were sleeping in our unfinished cabin in west texas and in the middle of a night a mountain lion was outside screaming on our porch.

Sounded just like this one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxo8X5uIWRE

I don't think it was there to get us but what are the recommendations on dealing with this.

Obviously I don't want to kill the thing unless I have to but I'm wondering if it is wandering through or will be back.

I set up 2 cams to see if it comes back for now.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

a thin rope attached to a bunch of empty cans up on a table so when the cat hits the rope it makes a noise that will make it crap itself.

Big cat will cover hundreds of miles in its territory. You probably won't see ( or hear it ) again.

Carry a handgun with a caliber that starts with "4" and ends with "magnum" when you are walking around your property just in case.

If said cat decides you are food, vigorously dissuade it of that notion.

I've seen them on my place.
Not long enough to get off a shot though.

Pee on your front porch, establishment dominance early and often.

They're pretty damn elusive. I think once they figure out you're there, they'll back off unless you put goats or calves out there.

When I hunted in Coleman Co, they were around and we were told to watch out for them, but never actually saw one. Felt pretty comfortable toting a 38 around when we were working on stuff. A few ranches down the road, the owners wife was pregnant and couldn't sleep one night, so she decided to go on a midnight stroll in the moonlight around their pond. She stumbled on some big cat. She said it was big like a mountain lion, but spotted, so there was some speculation it was like an ocelot or one of the rarer mexican cats.

Dad shot a bobcat out there with his old 30-30. He hit further back and gut shot it and it crawled off into some scrub and I had to go find it. Talk about pissed. Those growls made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I gave him a couple in the head with a 22, then waited to make sure.

He's already long gone.

The sidearm would be more for your own peace of mind than anything else.  If that cat decides you're lunch, you'll likely never even see it comin.

Hamburger with rat poison in it. Couple pounds may do it. Place it high where dogs can't get it.

Yes they exist in Texas
Why do you deny this every time the subject comes up?
This 1 walked out in front of me while I was deer hunting near Cotulla.

Are there mountain lions in Texas? Yes.

Are there mountain lions on the front porch of everyone's cabin or on every deer lease in Texas? No. But everyone claims to have one. I think it's funny and cute so many believe it.

The screaming call of a midnight fox will scare the neophyte outdoorsman half to death.

We see one on game cameras here and there at our place.  Pretty rare to find tracks, but it happens.  They are pretty good at steering clear of people

Fake news.  You must have a relationship with Russia and their photoshop professionals.

I have only seen once while on a 4 wheeler checking fence.  It was a fast SOB after it took off and it took me a moment to realize what I had just witnessed.

I really wish I could pop one for the skin.

Some people are just so much smarter than us common folk.
They have special access to the truth.

This article best sums up the "folklore and fancy" of mountain lion sightings, especially in Texas:

http://www.tdtnews.com/news/article_63e4249c-adfd-11e5-929b-ef0832f13f69.html

Make sure you read the passage, twice, read it twice, where the article mentions that mountain lions rarely if ever vocalize.

I'd love to get that black panther thread going again with all the black panther sightings by folks posting here(4 legged kind, not two legged kind).

The science of mountain lion study in Texas flies in the face of all the sightings and run-in tall tales folks post here. I'd bet a dollar that most other hunting stories(especially feral hog stories) are pure fantasy as well.

You may start out hunting the cougar, but it can, and will, turn the tables before you know it.  I have that experience.

Cougar meat is phenomenal!! It's all light pink meat like veal. Works great in place of veal in scaloppine or parmesan.

Seen a bunch of them over the years down by Freer to Laredo area.  Carry a pistol if not for anything but a warning shot in case you do see one.  But if he really does want you, he's gonna get you!

We have seen prints around a couple tanks at our place in Comanche.  No pics on cameras or fresh kills observed.  I keep my eyes peeled.
