Marines Barred From Filming Commercial on Streets of San Francisco

They're the strong and the proud, but the Marines aren't free to stand on the streets of San Francisco.

The Silent Drill Platoon of the U.S. Marine Corps wasn't allowed to be filmed Sept. 11 on California Street in San Francisco for a segment of its new advertising campaign, a Marine spokesman told FOXNews.com.

Instead, the elite group took its austere display to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area for the final segment of its "America's Marines" TV commercial. The group is on a two-month nationwide tour as part of the campaign.

Stefanie Coyote, the executive director of the San Francisco Film Commission, the group that denied the permit, was unavailable for comment Tuesday. Her office referred calls to San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom's press office, which did not immediately return a request for comment.

Coyote told KGO-TV that "traffic control was the issue."

The film commission did allow the Marines' production unit to film the street without Marines. They'll be superimposed in the spot, KGO-TV reports.

Meanwhile, the Silent Drill Platoon continued its campaign, filming a portion of the commercial Monday in New York's Times Square during the early morning rush hour.

The platoon is documenting its journey on the Web site www.Our.Marines.com and plans to film portions of the commercial in Sligo, Ky., on Oct. 6, in the Grand Canyon and at Hoover Dam on Oct. 22 and in the Rocky Mountains on Oct. 30, according to the group's online schedule. The public is invited to attend.

      Tucansam it's San Francisco.  It's a given already that the Marines are going to get denied.  A lot of anti-military people has taken over the city's position. City government that is.  It's my assumption on the "a lot" part though.  Can someone from or close to San Francisco correct me on this if I'm wrong.

I just read IIRC the speech titled "On sheep, wolves and sheepdogs" the other day. So does that mean all the SF residents will deny assistance from the National Guard or otherwise Military when the next earthquake strikes? Or if they get attacked, are they going to take up arms themselves and refuse military help? Somehow I doubt it...

I've simply never been more disgusted in my life.

From another weblink that I am unable to locate, the Marines wanted to film during morning commute which would screw up traffic big time.

Funny how traffic is not an issue when all those idiot bike riders are menacing young mothers with small children in a mini-van

Or when there is gay fest 2007.

Or when there is a stampede for gay marriage so they can get hooked up on the benefits/health care/pensions that are not funded (prepare for more cuts in police, fire, and road repairs).

And the mayor gets to jet set and wine and dine on tax payers dollars anytime there is some higher up muckety muck in town that he wants to kiss A_r_$_e and has no problems setting up parade routes, closing streets and building, setting up illegal searches, all with just 5 minutes notice.

No doubt if this was the GAY MARINE COLOR GUARD in tight cut off jeans the city would have no problem with just 5 minutes notice pulling out all the stops to make it happen. They would even give it a police escort and the mayor would take time out of his busy schedule for a photo op and all the TV stations would be called and they would be given a high speed police escort to make it on time.

Just remember this slimy chameleon mayor will bend like grass in wind, and tomorrow when he is in higher office if he feels he needs to be anti-gay marriage to get elected he will change his tune.

Lets just make certain the door is locked when he flips his views again.
