Hey Guys,
My daughter is doing a co-op with Stryker In Mahwah this winter. Any feedback on the town would be appreciated. I already learned I can't carry any toys while visiting. Thanks1

Mahwah is a nice suburban town, with a lot of cash. you have nothing to worry about, except maybe the crazy ass drivers on Rt. 17.

she has the shopping capital of NJ (Paramus) about 10 miles to her south, so keep them credit cards safe!!!

closest shithole would be Paterson (approx. 20 miles away)----tell her to avoid Paterson, especially the end she'd be approaching from if coming from Mahwah.

I lived in Mahwah for the first 3 years after I moved here from OH.  It is a nice town that might even fool someone into thinking that NJ is not such a bad place to live.

THere is nothing in Paterson anyway, so advise against going there.

Otherwise, Mahwah is nice.

Nice area- we are in Paramus. If she needs anything the Mrs. and I can help. The Mrs. is an unpaid tour guide for ALL the Paramus Malls. If ever there is a Zombie invasion, we are letting her pick the BO Mall and will make our perimeter there. She is guaranteed to design flanking/outflanking maneuvers and sale purchases with the best of them, all the while in heels.

Thank you! Hopefully all will go smoothly.
I appreciate the replies.

She'll also have one of the biggest malls in the country 15 mins to the north. All in all I work EMS up there and am a JBT about 30 mins away. So I could always help out if needed too..

Stevens?

Mahwah is a lot safer than the western part of Hoboken :-)  Rt 17 is no worse than anything I experienced in S.E. Michigan.  She'll be fine.

A buddy of mine's dad is an alumnus, mid 60's I guess.   Tells a story about being mugged on Washington within earshot if a couple police officers. Says he called out fir help and the cops just shrugged their shoulders and moved on...

gotta love Hudson County :-)

Closet shithole would be Stag Hill.

Mahwah is a nice town, although it can be expensive to live there.

Make sure she can hack driving in the snow. Mahwah has old roads with lots of hills and turns. It is not a modern town laid out on a grid.

My experience with Ramapo University, drawn from several years on Mahwah Company 1 Ambulance, is to be careful at the student apartment parties. They can get really stupid really fast. We had to scoop more than a few students who were unconscious and barely breathing out of there. Silliness abounds, but the school has lots of resources and an excellent library if she wants to do anything academic.

Ramsey has some nice restaurants and bars. I never cared for the ones in Mahwah much. No good reason why.

The two of you must go to Kinchley's Tavern and get pizza. You must do this. It is written.

She will be nearby Campgaw, a county park with a small ski area and rentals. it isn't much, but it's in town. If she wants to do better, Mountain Creek is not far away in Vernon. Ramapo Reservation is another county park in Mahwah that has some very nice and easy hikes.

Ramsey Outdoor is a few miles down Route 17 on the southbound side. It has clothes and footwear not super cheap, but nice stuff and some high end stuff if she wants. It also has a gun department that you can't use because New Jersey...

However, you can go to Thunder Mountain in Ringwood and shoot trap and skeet. Also in Ringwood are several of the Revolutionary War iron mines and Ringwood Manor. If she's around during the summer, there is a re-enactment at Monmouth every year.

You'll be close to Bear Mountain, which has a magnificent road up to the top along with nice, shear drops a couple of hundred feet down and not much between your car and the atmosphere. They close the road for the winter. The summer view is worth a picnic. Stunning. You can get trail maps for all the places I mentioned at Ramsey Outdoor.

As noted, she can take the New Jersey Transit trains to Hoboken and New York City to catch some night life

I think there is a disproportionately large number of emergency service people on this site, particularly volunteers. AR15.com keeps good company.
