My wife got me a set of the MSA Sordin Pro-X electronic hearing protection for Father's Day.  I took them out to the range tonight to test them out.   I was amazed by how clear and static free the sound quality was.  I could hear people talking low on the other side of the range better than I could without any hearing protection on.   You can hear every whispter and know exactly which direction it is coming from.

I had looked a few different brands out there including the Peltor line and all seemed to offer good noise reduction.  But the warranty on the MSA Sordins is five years, and the other brands had less than a year and most only 90 days.  So I figured it would be better to buy a more expensive brand once and not take chances.

I also got a set of the gel ear cups and the are amazing.  Very soft and even with shooting glasses on, you can't feel any pressure on your head.

I got the behind the neck version instead of the typical over the head headset.  I like them much better for comfort and the have a better noise reduction level as well.

Anyone else own a pair?  If so, do you like them?

I did a group buy here a few months ago for these. Been wearing mine on the range every since and they're phenomenal. I highly recommend them. As an Instructor, I can hear while saving what little hearing I have left!

I've been using them for several years.  I got them because I couldn't hear instructor commands in classes with muffs or plugs.

Sad I missed that group buy.  Did you end up with a pretty good discount?

Got some bad reviews at Midway. Sounds like they are great but unreliable. How are these superior to the $50 Peltors?

I have no experience with the MSA's, but my $75 Peltor Tactical 6s muffs EAT BATTERIES! I have to put a new set of AAA's in them every time I shoot. It doesn't help that the on/off/volume knobs get knocked to the ON position by the least bit of movement in a bag.   They're better than standard muffs, but not when the batteries are dead.

MSA's have an auto off after a given time period.

I've been rocking the MSA's since the 2010 Hack class. Have yet to change batteries and we're talking about 50-60 Range days since then. I've been nothing but impressed with them. Best made earpro out there right now.

I've had a set for about a year.  Compared to Peltor's:

- waterproof
- better sound
- very comfortable with gel seals
- great battery life, auto turn off feature
- low profile allows for better cheek weld

These are not great for indoor ranges due to low NRR but they work well if you double up with some plugs.

If you are only going to spend a few days a year at the range they are very pricey.  However, if you spend a lot of time at the range and training classes then they are worth it in my opinion.

I smoked a pair of Peltors in a day on one of the Ft Benning MG ranges. Turns out that they aren't sealed or waterproof and it's easy for sweat to get in them. Sweat and electronics don't mix so well. I haven't had any issues with my Sordins.

This would be why the battery contacts were completely corroded after wearing them all day at the HTF shoot.
I'd like to pick up a pair for MSA's if another deal deal deal gets put together.

Are the Peltor ComTac's any better?  Can anyone comment?

Madcap magician has a set of comtacs that I have tried.  They were very nice.  The sound was slightly better than sordins.  Comtac no longer makes their first generation which were excellent from what I have heard from some long time users.  I have seen some bad reviews regarding reliability when it comes to the second generation.

+1 to all the above. Plus:
- On button returns volume to the previous setting.
- Better at suppressing wind noise.

I also looked at the Pro Ears Predator Gold. IMHO they are comparable to Sordins in performance. But I didn't like that the circuit board and batteries were behind a thin piece of foam inside the ear piece. Water proof to rain (when wearing them) but not sweat. I sweat a lot so I was concerned that the circuit board and battery contacts would corrode. So I went with the Sordins. I've had them 2+ months and love them. I've use them in 2 classes and 4-5 range trips. Absolutely no complaints.

The MSA Sordins are the best I've ever owned, and I've owned numerous.

FWIW, I used to take my Peltors and "waterproof" the circuits with Saran wrap.  It helped a lot...not foolproof, but much better.

For the unwashed out there- If you ain't running Gel Ear Seals you're missing out.
GEL Earmuff Seals

Using MSA's without them is like Kool-Aid/ no Sugar. Peanut Butter/ no Jelly. Ham/ no burger.

I'm pretty happy with my MSA's the way they are, but it may be a case of not knowing what I don't know.  What do the gel seals do to improve them?

It's hard to describe. Kinda like gel-insoles for boots. Only for your ears. There is no way I'd ever go back to foam earcups.

It's like lubrication...sometimes it just feels better.

The gel seals make them much more comfortable especially after a few hours.  They also help seal around your eye pro.

I use the HL and they get painfill after 2hrs for me. They sound great but I do use plugs because they do not seal well.
The MSA would be nice but $$$$$.  I tried a friends with the gel inserts for 1.5hrs they're nice!

You must be out of your damn mind.

You know how you always latch on to something even though I tell you it's outdated/stupid/heavy/clumsy/retarded/makes you look fat/is used by Oprah/not reliable/doesn't hold value/will make you sterile? This is one of those moments. If you have never worn the MSA's then you simply can't compare.

Take the Pepsi challenge. There is no comparison.

Apparently I'm late the game..

I do have the first generation Comtacs and love them.  I've had them for about 4-5 years now.  The sound is awesome and the only time I'd consider double plugging is with an SBR indoors.  I haven't had any issues with water, and I've shot with them in some nasty weather.

I bought a set on cmshoot's group buy then I forgot to bring them the first time I could have used them...........to his class.

Been using them ever since.  They are great.  You can actually turn them up to hear even better than without them but they still muffle gunshots quite well.

HL...They're good for what they are....especially when you can find them used for $20 to $40. Used a friend's...bought my own. I like them, I'd just never try to pit them against the $300 product.
