I do want to shoot pistols and collect 1911's again, but the libertarian in me objects so much to the registration of firearms that I really do think I'm gonna pass on pistols in NY. It kinda sucks rights-wise, but practically I'm well protected at work and at home and don't really worry about the three block commute I have.... In Virginia where I was running all over the state in places I was new to and driving through MS-13 and Hamas land, it was one thing - not to mention the fact that I lived less than a mile away from range-heaven, the NRA HQ... In the five towns, the most dangerous thing that can happen to me is that I meet a nice girl and actually marry her. ... and no pistol round is gonna stop a five towns princess still single in her 20's |

Weasle, I usually don't issue certificates except upon request. I can send you one in the mail a few days after I get home unless you ABSOLUTLEY need it day of event. Let me know and I can make it happen either way. |

What kind of ammo is everyone going to be running? I'm having a tough time choosing, and I don't really want to run wolf (although it runs flawlessly in my rifle) b/c i don't want to slow the momentum of the class with failures. Thanks, Let me know.
OK I'm in. Just got another carbine so might as well learn how to shoot it better.
Edit: devil, I'm going to shoot Wolf 55gr MC. I've never had a failure with it either, shooting slow fire, mag dumps, whatever. I can't say the same for Prvi (no flash hole in 1 round). |
I have used Wolf in several carbine classes and routinely in competition, including a recent carbine match with a long range stage with 4 x 8" circular plates at 200 meters and a 3/4 size or so IPSC target at 300 meters. It looked pretty damned small, I'll tell you that. I hit all the targets from all 3 shooting positions. The number of failures in the classes and competitions due to Wolf ammo has been 0, in my own personal experience. That said, I had a dud primer last weekend when I was shooting a CMP type match with some friends on the offhand stage. This was with a newer case of Wolf I bought last year. And I have seen other guns have issues with Wolf. If your gun shoots it, use it. If you aren't sure, put a couple hundred rounds through it in an hour or so. Get it warm and dirty. If it runs, there is your answer. I have seen a LOT of ammo related failures from crappy surplus like Olympic and others. I would also highly suggest you guys show up with a properly zeroed rifle. Some classes dwell too much on this. Chris likely won't, so it will be nice if your carbine is ready to go. I personally use a 50 yard zero on my carbines. Also make sure it is cleaned and lubed. Check out some of the carbine threads on the MDTS forum for some thoughts on cleaning and lubing. |

Thanks for the feedback on the wolf guys. I guess I'm going to have to scour the net for some good steel cased stuff and use the 400 (600 reserved for class) to do a final opcheck. Thanks again.

Now that we got enrolment setup lets talk about what gear we're going to wear to the event. I know everyone has there own reason for training so their gear choice will be chosen by this but I would love to see what you guys are planning to utilise at the event.
Personally, the likelihood of using a carbine at work for me is rather low so I will likely be training as a civilian. This being said, I need to figure out what would be best for a "Civilian" with a rather broad mission statement to bring to the event. So how about it guys? |
As I told riese in a PM I generally run a class with a LBV & thigh holster. That being said, I have also run classes with mags stuffed in a kangaroo pouch on a hooded sweatshirt and in the cargo pockets of my 511's. It's really up to you. If you are LE and use vests etc., then I say run that in the class. If your a civilian then run clean like you just pulled the carbine out of the closet.... you get the idea. I am not LE but using good gear makes a class (especially a 2-5day class!) a lot more comfortable and allows the student to better focus on course content and instruction instead of constantly dicking with gear. Just MO.

I was planning on throwing on my hockey pants, My chest rig and a football helmet wrapped in tinfoil
Actually I've never taken one of these courses and I'm too big and fat to get into my hockey pants anymore and my ears stick out the side of my football helmet so I too will just show up in regular clothing and my new uber tacticool zombie chest rig |
I got a whole bunch of 5.11 pants during that may 11th sale. kneepads and all. I was planning on testing them out at the class.
I was gonna wear a blackhawk vest.... heck, I still am. It's got these huge mag pockets and the shoulder pad comes in handy. Plus it makes me look more like a "football player 280" than "a guy who works at a desk 280". I tried shooting with a chest rig down in VA. I couldn't get used to it. It really limitted how I can crook my rifle to reload mags or check the chamber. But I guess we'll learn how to do that the right way now, won't we.... |
I have a Black hawk chest rig and just ordered a dump pouch from Bravo Co. Either 511s and a hooded sweat shirt or a flight suit maybe.
A good pair of gloves are a must also. |
Just dont wear that damn cowboys jersey and all will be well |
I think i'm going in with my AK, some wolf ammo, and regular clothes. Perhaps a pull over sweatshirt with a hand-warmer pocket in front.
Only deciding thing left would be which sidearm. I think my 228 Sig might make the trip. Haven't shot it in awhile but it runs like a caddy. |
Gloves are always a good idea when running a stock AK. Just my opinion.
Damn, it's not even October yet and I think I have all the gear I need. I guess I can always find something else to buy. USPS MO going out today. |
