Hello.

The subject says it all -- I've got a Saiga 12 I'm hamfistingly converting over to pistol grip and buttstock and need the extra holes welded up.

Anyone know of a gunsmith who can do it here locally?  (local being Portland or Beaverton, Hillsboro, etc...)

Thanks!

I found a neat trick for drilling the holes.

I had a flat I tried bending and it didn't quite work out.  I saved it, however.  I took a cut off wheel and used a dremel to cut out the bottom part of the receiver.  Voila -- instant template.  I used the back trigger guard hole and the trigger cut out to align the cut blank on top of the saiga.  That made it easy to locate the holes.  One catch is that I think it shifted a bit so I may not have the holes for the trigger guard exactly centered.  I drilled out the pistol grip area and then used files to make the hole square.  I think it came out OK.

I'm happy to help you butcher er convert your saiga.  Getting the pins and rivets out is easy.  That square hole is a pain.

I am going to have someone else finish mine up.  I know a guy, and he does good work, but he is out of state.

I found a guy who could weld up the holes -- Mike at Tornado Technologies.  The only thing is that I have to remove the paint from the receiver otherwise the finish could catch on fire and/or smoke...

I'm getting set up with a sand blaster. I have the cabinet, but lack a big enough compressor and tank.

So you're going to remove the finish completely and then refinish after conversion?

JB Weld looks good. I countersunk the holes for more surface area.

you shouldnt have removed the rivets that hold the cover plate on

if you grind the heads off and remove the plate then sand them flat you arnt left with unused holes in the bottom of the rec

the easyest way it to just put a rivet in each of the side holes

if you want to weld it clamp a copper plate to the back of the rec then any monkey can weld it for you

I was quoted $10 a hole.  Do you know any monkeys with TIG welders?
