I am looking to switch a 20" barrel for a 16" barrel but the only heavy profile, mid length gas system barrels I can find are all threaded at the muzzle.

Because of our "wonderful" AWB laws, I have to have a brake pinned in place, which I don't mind, but I don't want the notorious noise that goes with it.  I tried looking for a fake flash suppressor, or a threaded collar, but neither seems to be worth the effort if they aren't going to be doing anything, even a little bit, for the performance of the rifle.

I was able to find this, http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=5594/Product/AR_15_LEVANG_LINEAR_COMPENSATOR, which would seem to fit the bill for me.

My question is, will it be NY legal?  I'm worried about the whole grenade launch aspect of the law, since I haven't been able to find a good source for what will accept a launcher, and what won't.
