Hi, I'm new to Jacksonville, moved here a few days ago, don't know anyone, have no idea where to shoot, where to go offroading, what's open range and what's not.  I'm from Arizona, and the streets here confuse the hell out of me.  Just trying to make some friends out here and find people that are into the same stuff I am, oh also I need to find someone out here that stocks parts/works in 1911's.  Also anyone have surplus 5.56 out here?  We had JGSales in Az don't know if you guys have anything like that out here.  Thanks for the info everybody, I'm bored outta my mind out here, oh yeah I'm on Touchton road and South something if that helps.  Any local shooting boards as well?

That would be Touchton and Southside Blvd. It's a nice area, lots of places to go if you like the nightlife i.e Alehouse, Legendz, Tinseltown etc... I'm usually in the area a few times a week hunting chicks.

There are a couple of indoor ranges, Gun Gallery is the place to go for AR stuff, I hear there's a guy off Cassat Ave that does 1911 work (Jim Rose?). The only outdoor range around is Gateway out on the westside, but I hear it's full of range nazi's. Other than that a few of us always make it to FDCC in Lkae City or the St Augustine FOP range.

There's big Social shoot coming up on the 5th down in Starke at the Bradford farm, there are a number of us going.. Let me know if you're interested we can hook up and you can hitch a ride or follow us down there.

Oh yeah, you made it just in time for the World's Largest Cocktail Party. It's going to be one hell of a weekend!

Yeah im down for that, I heard about this worlds largest party thing, it's crazy, everyone in this townhouse place I live in has that florida gator on the back of their car.  I've gone over to the TGI Fridays and Ale House a few times, it's in walking distance so thats cool.  Personally I would have picked a more secluded area on some land if I had a choice on where to live out here, my wife got this place a few months back before I came out.  So you guys don't just have a place where you can go into the forest and hunt/camp/shoot?  Not like the desert I guess huh haha?  Also can you take your trucks on the beach and cruise up the coast without getting in trouble?

yeah there are plenty of places like that.. just not in town Osceola and Ocala come to mind but I've never done it. I'm more of a shooting city boy who shows up to shoots everynow and then. There are plenty of members who like to camp and shoot, I'm sure they'll be chiming in later.

You can drive on huguenot park, it's up Hecksher drive. Jacksonville Beach is more for the nightlife and hanging out. huguenot is where to go to get some sun.

Yeah, but you'll have to jump on the Mayport Ferry from there.. it'll dump you right up the road from there. From Jax beach you'll have to take Mayport Rd all the way to the base, the Ferry is right around that area.

The easiest way for you to get there directly would be taking Southside North towards the airport over the Dames point Bridge and just hang a right at Heckscher Drive. There's a scenic 20 minute drive and it'll be on your right.

If you're looking for somewhere to offroad Ocala is the best by far.Jeep or not I would look here;
http://www.floridajeepers.net/forum/

Those guys always have something going on in Ocala.Fun place to go offroading and camping.

+2 for Jim Rose if you are looking for a 1911 guy.

+3 on Mr. Rose.  He's about the best in Jax.

Camping here is a lot different than you are used to.  The evenings do not cool off like in the desert.  Camping when it is 85 degrees and 90+ percent humidity is brutal here.

Of course, I'm assuming you're tent camping.  RVs with all the comforts is fine, but I like to be closer to nature than that.

The Gateway range has a nice facility, but they have gone over the top in rules there.  I was a member there for almost 19 years and just this year have let it lapse.  They are not overly "black gun" friendly and will harass those with them (particularly if you're younger).  There is no place to rapid fire a rifle (using rifle ammo).  I think the numbers speak for themselves: there are about a million in population in Jax, the range only has about 2500 members (despite their claim of over 3000).

I'm the lucky and proud owner of a piece of land in Baker county that I can shoot on.  I can bump fire a case of ammo there if I want.   I need to borrow the neighbors tractor to knock down the weeds again, but I'll do it after hunting season!  There are a number of deer that enjoy my clearing (and the clover, silver peas and rape that is planted there).  There will be a couple less this year (Game management reasons you understand).

Ocala is the place for 4X4 action.  Been there and they are a great group of guys and are pretty hard core.

Been wanting to join the group for a trip to Raiford.  I don't get to shoot any of my rifles at distances further than about 250 yards.

Welcome and hope you enjoy Jax.

You can shoot rapid fire at the Osceola range in Lake City (that's where I live (60 miles West)).

Any time you guys want to go off roading let me know. I haven't been in a long time and I've got 3 4x4s in the yard. I've been itching to get in the woods.

There are a lot of trails in the Osceola NF and other management areas near here but I don't know them well. This time of year they will be full of hunters so I usually try to stay out of their way. I've always wanted to ride the Alapaha River in Jasper. It goes back and forth from a small river to a dry river bed every so often. I don't know much more about it than that but it sounds like it would be a great trip. Oh, and it empties in to the Suwannee just above the Withalacoochee(?). Lot's of springs, canoeing, etc.

Come to FDCC shoots. Lot's of nice people with cool toys.

you can drive on Anistasia or Valano beach in the Aug., mud when it rains on Collins road in O.P., just don't get caught, & the Hilliard mud boggs are always fun... once. There's public hunting in Guana National Park, 210 & A1A, Oceola National forest off I-110 near Green Cove, & Camp Blanding if you wear alot of blaze & some kevlar! Cheap"er" land for sale in St. Johns County, near Bass Haven & Coley Cove, outside city limits, but about 15 minutes from downtown St. Augustine & 30 or so from downtown Jax.
