BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - Colorado outdoor retailer Jax Mercantile says it has stopped selling rifles and handguns with high-capacity magazines at its six stores in Colorado and Iowa because of the mass shootings of schoolchildren in Connecticut.

ax President Jim Quinlan said Friday the ban applies to weapons that come with magazines holding more than 10 rounds.

He says his company sold out of that type of weapon after the Connecticut shootings and won't order more.

The ban also applies to separate magazines that hold more than 10 rounds.

Quinlan calls it a "moral and personal decision." It was first reported by the Boulder Daily Camera.

Jax is based in Fort Collins and has stores there and in Lafayette and Loveland, Colo., and one in Ames, Iowa. Jax will continue selling conventional hunting rifles.

Well I just made a "moral and personal" decision not to shop there also.

Was just coming here to post this.  What a shame.  While their firearms and ammo selection were mediocre at best, I enjoyed their store as a decent one-stop-shop for good outdoor gear, ranch supplies, etc.  Unfortunately, my family is done with them.  We're to the point of simply drawing the lines with these companies.

I just went to Jax for the first time ever today, didn't even know they existed until this week. It was something i didn't want to do, but they sell ammo cans for a relatively fair price. Gander, Sportsmans, Bass Pro all want $20 + fuck that. I maybe should have ordered online, but meh. It was a pretty cool store, sad to see their new stance. I doubt i'll be back from here forward, but as i said i wanted ammo cans and they had them

Just found him on Facebook and sent him a message stating my stance on his choice. Thanks for the heads up on this.

Good call, I emailed through their store website as well, I hope enough of us are making it a point to contact a business when things like this happen.

I like how Jax waited to sell out and make a profit on all those guns before they made their choice. If it was truly a moral decision then he should've pulled them all off the shelf early in the game! That place is now on my NO buy list

The owner could care less. They never liked firearms and only added different inventory at the request of the former gun mgr. I inquired years ago regarding a few different items, their reply was " We do not carry firearms meant for one thing only"  How's that fishing gear working for ya?

"Hi.   I just wanted to let you know that every year I buy a large amount of gear at JAX.   From my Quicken records, I've documented upwards of $12,000.00 spent in your store going back to 2003, mostly on camping stuff, outdoor supplies, and a never-ending series of Merrels, Uggs, and other nice shoes for my kiddo.   You can verify that if you want, I'd be glad to help you do that.   Right here is what I would buy this spring.  Its about $600.00 worth of stuff.   Except that I'm not going to buy this stuff.  I'm going to walk out the door.  Your business has decided to make a political enemy of law abiding gun owners and while its you're right to decide what you will sell and what you will not sell, your issuance of a 'statement' calling it a moral decision was a slap in the face to me as a law abiding person.   I'm not going to buy this basket full of stuff.   And as you spend some time re-shelving it,  I want you to keep in mind that not only will I never be back, but I will spend my time and effort to persuade as many of my friends and family to likewise stay out of your stores.  God only knows when you will decide that their favorite style of fishing lure, or camping stove, or hunting knife, or hiking boot transgresses your odd moral compass."
