I’m thinking about taking the general defensive handgun class. Is it worth the $350 + ammo and gas?

Anything I should know before going?

thanks

Do take InSights GDH class...very good class and the instructors know their stuff !

Make sure you have a sturdy gun belt and holster...you will be drawing from the holster

for two days. So no cheap holsters that collapse after you draw your handgun .

Bring a handgun that your knowledgeable and comfortable with and be sure you know

the firearms safety rules.

Have Fun !

I took it, some of, if not the best money I've spent towards guns.  Gave me way more confidance and skill.  Post your farnam drill times when you get back if you want, my best was 13.3 seconds.

Should I bring IWB or OWB?

I have a Comptac C-Tac and a Safariland ALS.

bring both.  As long as it stays open after you draw, its fine.

One guy had an mtach and it worked great.  It's sort of a ccw-aimed class so I'd bring whatever you plan on ccwing with.

Definitely worth every penny.

I took the GDH course back in August 2008 and I am still absorbing stuff.

I plan on attending several more courses this year as well.

I signed up for Feb 14-15 GDH. Hopefully BiMart gets ammo in soon.

Bimart normally carries Winchester white box FMJ.
Decent ammo, but filthy stuff.
Head down to Surplus Ammo & Arms (Gunz & Shizzle) and load up on the Magtech ammo.
Competitive with BiMart WWB, but much cleaner.

I ran the GDH class with WallyWorld WWB and my SIG's were absolutely filthy nasty afterward.

Had to do major cleaning jobs each day.

Word of advice...purchase a LULA universal pistol mag-loader.  My thumbs were totally raw after a weekend of loading my pistol mags so many times.

Bimart here in Eburg doesnt sell WWB, just UMC and CCI.

I ran the course with my SIG P-220 Combat.
It was 100% reliable no matter how filthy.
I just have a thing about keeping my guns clean and lubed.

I'm planning on taking the 1911 operators course, boss won't let me carry my 1911 until I take it. Should be in May, but it's a new course with no details posted on the site yet.

Definitely take it. I recommend bringing both IWB and OWB if you have them. Depending on how comfortable you are drawing and firing from the holster, you may want to switch. I used the OWB the first day, and the IWB the second day. (I will say the IWB gets to be a bit of a PITA as you will have to keep your shirt tucked so that its visible to the instructors)
