I have today free and evenings as well all week.
Anything worth seeing or local food?

Basque food

Buck Owens Crystal Palace, I think there may be some other Bakersfield style CW places. Might be interesting to go to just as a novelty might be interesting.

You do realize that we leave Bakersfield off the list when we talk about all the great places in CA, and we do it on purpose?

I'll second the Crystal Palace, CW is not my thing but I will admit that I had a great time there. Good people, live bands (very good live bands), just a really nice atmosphere. Food was good too.

eta Other than the Crystal Palace and Famoso drag strip I got nothing.
Oh, if you like to line dance then the CP is your place.

CW in Bako is dead. You got crystal palace and bullshed are about it. Used to have rockin rodeo and caddilac ranch. If you want a good pizza hit Tonys Pizza really good chili verde pizza. If you can get out for breakfast JMs on rosedale hwy or Spencer’s on Rosedale as well. Market place isn’t bad you could kill a couple hours with dinner and people watching. There is a Tahoe Joes and Johnny Garlics there. If you want a good steak there is Hungry Hunter and KCs Steakhouse, they also have an old school bar/ Lounge set up. 2nd amendment sports has two locations not bad to window shop, I think you can rent guns and shoot as well. Also the Blvd is a new place kinda by crystal palace. Local goody is Jakes Tex Mex on oak. If you’re down town there is the Padre with a nice restaurant as well as Rice bowl with an older style lounge/ bar. Not sure if you’re into to but there is deja vu on golden state, don’t go to teaser pleaser, naaassttyyyyyyy.

What industry do you work in if you don’t mind me asking. PA to Bako kinda screams oil.

You realize Bakersfield is the one place where I have run into people "from Bakersfield" all over the world. People make fun of Bakersfield but damned if you dont run into people all over hell and back that know of it.

Norway? Check.
London? Check
Little assed dive boat in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef of Australia? Check.

True on Basque food. Not a fan of Benjis. Noriegas and Woolgrowers being better choices.

Bakersfield is the one reason I dont flee California. As much as this state sucks out loud, a low cost of living combined with some of the best remote driving roads I have ever driven is why I stay. Sucks that the hills are only green for 2 months out of the year.

If I were the OP with a few free days... i would rent something sporty with Air Conditioning(due to summer) and cruise the foothills.

Want to hit the coast? Punch out highway 58 going west. After you get through Buttonwillow catch Reward road heading west where you will pick up the 58 again. You can then enjoy about 1.5 hours of nice 2 lane middle of nowhere cruising roads where you punch out at Santa Margarita which is close to San Luis Obispo as well as MoroBay. Truth be told I usually just turn around and come back.

For good burgers that are not a chain. You git Fabulous Burger out off Airport by Merle Haggard. You have the Woolworths building down town that puts In&Out to shame, add pastrami and bacon. Then you have Moo Creamery. We had some other spots but they are more hit and miss now.

Try to stay out of Oildale. Tweeker trash infest the north side of the river from the bluffs all the way west to the 99 around Knudsen/Olive Drive.

Hope this is not too late. Texas Road House on Ming Ave and Wible. Damn good steaks. It can get crowded.
