Ok guys, I need help finding a decent used car for my 16 yr old son. He got my mom's car when she passed but he doesn't like driving a 91 Caprice Classic. I have someone that wants to buy the Caprice but I'm having trouble finding something for him. I'd feel better buying from some of you or somebody you know. He's been looking for a Jeep Cherokee or similar sport ute or a pickup. He has from 2000-3000 to spend. He just needs something to drive to school and work afterwards. Let me know if you know of anything. Just IM me.

Thanks, Mark

For that kind of money, get him a late '70s to early '80s diesel engined Mercedes Benz - either the 300D, 300TD, or 240D.  They are all tanks and get great mileage.  $2-3k will get you one in rather nice condition.

The diesel engines last roughly forever, and if you can find one, the manual transmissions in the 240Ds are a blast (even though it has a 0-60 time of roughly 23 seconds).  The cars are stupid simple to work on, and there are tons of parts guys in the Atlanta metro area to get replacement parts when needed - and they aren't all that expensive, either.

Seriously.  He could easily keep such a car through college with minimal trouble, and the Mercedes star on the hood will help him pick up chicks.

I told him that Caprice had more room for chicks.  He wants a pickup or something to do a little off-roadin'.
