It will probably be on pavement 80% of the time and no severe off-roading when it is off the pavement.  I need something to help re-hab my Achilles tendon and get a few (dozen) pounds off.  Any suggestions would be helpful.  I don't need the latest and greatest, but I want decent quality.  Are the 26" Mongoose mountain bikes at Wal-Mart worth a flip for $275?  I'm 6'0" and 300 and some change in weight.

Honestly, if you want to shed weight and get into to tip top shape then you should buy a road bike. Skinny tires. You can burn about 2,500 calories on a 2-3 hour ride averaging 15 mph. Start by riding at the silver comet trail because it is flat, straight and long. Before you know it you will have lost a lot of weight.

I own a Trek 1500. The more money you spend the lighter the bike and better the componentry. I bought my bike at cycleworks and they have lifetime service when you buy a bike there. Good luck.

I agree with navyguns45. I wouldn't wast the money at wally world. You should probably
get a large frame bike, if your frame is the wrong size you won't be comfortable at all. Check out a local bike shop for used bikes. They will be happy to help no matter what your skill level or cycling goals may be.

I went and test drove a Gary Fisher today that I think is perfect for me.  I almost bought it but realized it was for sale at MSRP.  I don't pay MSRP for anything.  Even if it is only $0.50, I'm not paying full price.  I called around to other dealers, and I was able to find it for $50 less somewhere else.  I'm going to give today's dealer a shot at my business since they were very nice, but that extra $50 will get me a helmet, too.

Make sure to wear your Yamika when you go buy it.

These are quite cheap and hey, you could make some extra money giving people rides while you work out.

I got one today from a shop in Douglasville.  I took it out for a spin this afternoon and was pleasantly pleased.  I ended up getting a Trek 7.2FX.
