AUGUSTA, Ga. - A U.S. Marine reservist collecting toys for children was stabbed when he helped stop a suspected shoplifter in eastern Georgia. Best Buy sales manager Orvin Smith told The Augusta Chronicle that man was seen on surveillance cameras Friday putting a laptop under his jacket at the Augusta store. When confronted, the man became irate, knocked down an employee, pulled a knife and ran toward the door. Outside were four Marines collecting toys for the service branch's "Toys For Tots" program. Smith said the Marines stopped the man, but he stabbed one of them, Cpl. Phillip Duggan, in the back. The cut did not appear to be severe.

The suspect was transported to the local hospital with two broken arms, a broken leg, possible broken ribs, multiple contusions and assorted lacerations including a broken nose and jaw...injuries he sustained when he reportedly fell trying to escape after stabbing the Marine.

The suspect, Tracey Attaway, 39, was held until police arrived. The Richmond County Sheriff's office said it is investigating.

"Fell" huh?

All I can say is I'm glad this was down south in a state (hopefully) with more sense.  If this had happened in NY, the Marines would probably be in jail right now and Al Sharpton would be organizing a protest march against them!!!

Score another one for Uncle Sams Misguided Children!

Haha NICE!

Marine: "Yes officer, me and my other marine buddies tried to peacefully stop him, but he fell down 3 flights of stairs........"
Cop: "Sounds about right...case closed!"

Perp got what he deserved.

I read a blurb on this when it happened, but it didn't include the "Fall" part or the injuries.  That makes the story a WHOLE lot more enjoyable.

In NY you may use physical force or deadly force to stop unlawful deadly force upon yourself or another.  The question may be when was the man detained and when did he stop falling.     I'm thinking Fox 2/25 Marines in NY would have done the same.

I also think it's hilarious that "he fell".  Too bad he didn't fall some more.

Sadly this story may be hyped up a bit.  A search of Google News found several links to the story but nothing related to the condition of the thief other than him being in custody:

I think there's some e-myth embellishment there. I found four separate stories from different news sources. All agree with everything in the news item except any injuries to the subject.
